I just went to google.com, and notice their "logo of the day" is the word Google, in Morse code.
(I'm sure they'll change it fairly soon)

skiing with my friend last weekend I kept hearing da dit da dit da da dit da.. I had to laugh when he finially dug in his pocket and answered his cell phone. I ask him if he knew what it ment,, he said no.
He had know idea how he ended up with the ring tone.

It's what you use calling CQ on HF followed by your call sign..... every one knows that ::)
In fact, I'd like to know were he got that ring tone, I'd like to use it. :2thumbsup:

M is two dashes (O is three dashes)
SMS = "Short message Service"

My primary use of Morse Code was on the 3,300 MHz (9 cm) Band in the 1960s for weak signal conditions. My transmitter power in those days was 50 milliwatts RF from klystrons.

I just made new ring tones for my ham friends using their call signs. Now when I hear the call sign, I'll know who it is instead of my old music tones. Yes your tax dollars hard at work ::)
Since I don't receive e-mail services on my phone, I have to figure out how to get them to the phone :-\

I think I can honestly say that the first time I've ever really heard Morse Code, is just now, on Calindy's post and Wrightwood's tinyurl thingy (John, what did that message say?). I've heard the repeater identifying itself, I guess that's Morse Code. I'm sure glad they eliminated that requirement to get a ham radio license, or it would have taken me another 50 years! ;D

I agree ForestGal as I attempted in the 60's to learn Morse Code and gave up on trying to get an amateur radio license.

I don't like Morse Code
I have no use for Morse Code
I will not have anything to do with Morse Code
Those that still use it will all be gone in about 20 years give or take a few years. Then and only then will Morse Code be truly dead. ;D

It should have died with the telegram without any fan fair what-so-ever.

Ok... so I guess I'm "dead man walking".... :-\
I must admit, after getting my code speed up to 25 just to pass the 20 for my xtra it kinda took the wind out of my sails of desire.
Still faster than texting tho.
I hated hearing operators using the keyboard and CW software to generate their code message. I would never answer they're CQ.

I've got a nice Bencher, and a straight key, that I did enjoy using every now and then. I never used it enough to remain proficient at my class level.
The Bencher especially, is a pretty looking contraption, and sadly collects dust on my shelf now.
I got interested in CW when my elmer (Bill Welsch, W6DDB in Lancaster) invited me to his house to talk about the whole thing. So there we were, in his office. He's carrying on a conversation with me, and at the same time he's frantically keying away with one hand, and having a QSO with someone on HF. And he did it with such ease. That was impressive. He's one of those fellows, that could probably listen to RTTY and decode it by hand ;)
I hate to admit it, but those teens, who can text message at 20+ words per minute using the new-fangled 123ABC language of numeric cell phone keypads is pretty impressive too.

I guess I'm basically toast on this subject. I have no desire to learn Morse Code. Just talking is so much easier, and I'm just learning that. I know what the words mean, BobC, from just studying so much, but I certainly don't know how to apply it.

Thanks for the message Wrightwood. Just listening to that brought back such great memories...my Dad sitting at his ham radio sending out messages to his buddies. Wow, I don't think I've heard any morse code for at least 25 years. Here's to my Dad W6WSZ (William 6 William Sugar Zanzibar)

Gee, don't we have any fans of submarine movies out there? How would the sailors in the sunken sub communicate with rescuers if they couldn't tap in Morse on the hull??
And if ham signal strength isn't strong enough for voice communications, doesn't code often get through where voice can't? I had the good fortune years ago to take a weekend course from Gordon West to get my first license - code Technician - and am sorry I let it lapse. Gordo is pretty quick over the basics, but it was a good way to dip into the ham waters.

SoCalGal, you should 're-enlist'! No code required now, and it's pretty darn handy in town with so many active hams - when the power goes out, somebody always seems to know the scoopage on why. Btw, Gordan West is still out there and publishes probably the most popular study book.
As for elmers, when I first joined my local club we had a older guy who had a key on his steering wheel and could do 40wpm while driving the car. I think being able to do code well must come from a similar gene that covers being able to play the piano. For the rest of us it's work and work that we don't do well...

My Morse Code story:
Enlisted in the Army Security Agency in 1972 as a CW Intercept Operator (MOS O5H). Spent about 8 hours a day for months on end having it pounded into my head in Pensacola and Ft. Devens, MA. Then, two tours in SE Asia listening to the NVA and other pound it out (usually about 15 wpm). Then a great time as a civilian contractor, copying the Soviets poundint it out (they liked it at about 30-35 wpm). Also, my Outlook Express mail notification is CQ I presume that other, 3rd world places, still use it.

I use Morse code almost exclusively on ham radio. If you hear me on 20, 30, or 40 meters, give me a call! My 10 watt signal isn't very big, but if conditions are favorable, I can chat all over the US, Japan, Australia, South America, and sometimes Europe.
I usually run about 30 wpm but can go slower or a little faster.

No not really. Just another example of our tax dollars at waste.
