The wife and I were on an outing and I took her to the creek to show her some "wild" trout. I tracked one down and we snuck up for a close look and it looked a bit different. It was about 6" and had large spots along the middle of the length of the fish. Is this typical of young Rainbow Trout or was this perhaps something else? Do they stock that creek?

Sounds like a Rainbow. They no longer stock and in most places where there is easy access, there are very few fish.
Here are some pictures of Rainbow Trout from Southern California that were caught in streams (none of them from the Angeles NF)

Their colors can vary widely based on the bottom conditions and colors. They can be quite dark...almost black looking at times and other times they are very silver. They are always beautiful.

Because of the drought and high water temperatures locally, we limit our fishing to times when the water temps in the creeks are below 64 degrees. We have not fished locally (Sierras and lakes now) since around April so as not to stress the fish. Even with good catch and release methods, there is a high mortality rate for released fish. Like anything anymore...the quality fish remain where most folks are unwilling to work to get to.

Knowing what goes on in Big Rock Creek, nothing would surprise me what could be genetically transformed. ::)
