The Hwy2 camera went down yesterday due to a power outage on Hwy 2. The power was restored late yesterday after the travel agency was closed. All computers were shut off when they left for safety reasons. The livecam computer was repowered an hour or so ago and is working.

The downtown camera was removed from it's previous location and does have a new home when we can get it installed properly. The issue of putting up a livecam is not something that can be taken for granted. It requires a great deal of work and planning to do it right. I've not removed the links from the web pages because of the amount of time to redo so many webpages as I know we will have another camera up.

As far as the 3rd camera goes it has been up and working 24 hours a day for as long as I can remember. Sure there are a few minor outages once in a while for maintenance, power outages, dropped internet connection. It may not be the most exciting shot for some to look at but it runs 24x7 has infrared capability and shows the ground close up. It's easy to recognize when there's snow, it's raining and best of all when wildlife shows up at the guzzler. By the way the guzzler is now heated so wildlife can have water available in sub freezing conditions.

A lot more goes on behind the scenes on maintaining this web site than most realize. It's not easy to keep 6 computers, a weather station, about 10 livecams and this entire website up and running 24 hours a day.
(Yes I maintain about 10 cameras in Wrightwood and wouldn't dare make them all available online as it's impossible to keep them ALL running without some of them being down. Check how many of the Caltrans cameras are usually down and you'll know it's not just me ;)

Again, no good deed goes unpunished. Wrightwood maybe you should just start selling cheese on this website to go along with all that whine. Seems to me you would make a mint .

thank you for explaining about the two web cams - and thank you for all that you do to make them function.  we live in florida but visit wrightwood several times a year to see my brother who has a home there.  we enjoy looking at the web cams and seeing the streets - and the ground on the residential camera.  it would be interesting to learn how often the sites are visited - and where the viewers are from.  there may even be more from florida!  i know that our children in north carolina check the cameras often to see what is happening in their uncle's town!  thank you again - and we can hardly wait to see the third camera back on!

jeanfrank,
You're real fortunate that you actually get to see the livecam pictures before we do. With our server being located in Florida we have to wait a few thousandths of a seconds for the images to make a return trip back to Wrightwood.

I know for a fact that we have other visitors from Florida. Feel free to post a message on our guest book as it's been reactivated. (that's a whole other story on why it continues to be nailed with spam  :-X

Would it be possible to switch in some of those other cameras, or would it simply be too much hassle?

The other cameras are not within the downtown area and would not provide useful road condition information.

It seems that your remote control cam is down quite a bit.  Any reason for that?

I am in awe. I have had the pleasure of meeting other moderators on some other BBS's (some years ago when BBS's were all text based and you had to call them with your 2400 baud modem) :) and as with them, it sounds to me like this is a passion of yours, not just a hobby.

I do have one question/request. Until I read this thread, I didn't know what the heck I was looking at on the res camera. If you could update a description of what we are looking at on the page, and perhaps add something to give it perspective. I have no idea if this trough is 1 foot wide, or 10 feet wide.

Thank you for listening, and keep up the awesome job you are doing.  :2thumbsup: :2thumbsup:
Title: Pictures and live cams question
Post by: nascarnut on Feb 24, 05, 02:53:54 AM
When will the live cam in down town ever get fixed? And I was also just looking at the winter pictures in the photo gallery of the big storm in February of '01. How does this year compare to that? Someone should post new pictures in those photo galleries because I've seen some awesome shots on this board submitted from forum members.

nascarnut,
Your number of posts may have changed when a few topics were purged such as road conditions. If you had postings in that topic from yesterday they were deleted so only today's road conditions show.

There is no comparison in the amount of recent snowfall to that of Feb 2001. The snowfall that the Big Pines area has received this year is a whole different story. The village of Wrightwood has yet to get a big dump this year. I would consider 3 or 4 feet of snow on the ground as good amount for Wrightwood.

We have found another location for a new webcam. To put up another camera we had to make sure that it had a DSL connection, have space for a computer system, provide a view that was useable by the biggest number of website visitors and a business location that was accessible most every day.

It's taken longer to get to this project than anticipated as many things had to be considered and available time for another free community service project has been limited. It will be worth the wait.

Maintaining this website, being involved with community service projects, responding to fires, floods and accidents as a press photographer, conducting a forest rehab project in Wrightwood, actively involved in the Bighorn Sheep Restoration program and being self employed doesn't leave a lot of free time.

Holy cow, John!!!  Do you ever sleep????  Please re-post the address for donations - I lost the one I first printed out.  I do want to help here, in the only  I can (monetarily) - sure can't help computer-wise!!!  This forum is such a valuable resource for our entire community.  I (and  I think most of us), don't know what we'd do without this forum :2thumbsup: :2thumbsup: :2thumbsup:

ForestGal,
I finally setup a Paypal account so website visitors and forum members can make a donation online. The donate button can be found at the top of this page or on the home page.

Thank you for your support

LiveCam Hwy2 seems to be stuck on Monday all week.
I tried Ctrl R daily but it doesn't update.
Is the camara down?

That was quick!
Since no one else mentioned it all week I thought it must just be me.

Thanks

I know you are doing more than any 10 people out there (that was the good part).
However, I would like the text about the Stellar jays and finch nest robbers updated (that was the bad part).
I am certainly enjoying the new woodpecker nest box and their antics (that was another good part).

(This is known as a "sandwich".  When you have a complaint, be sure to compliment before and after.  First one slice of bread (compliment), then the filling (complaint), and finally another slice of bread (compliment).

Love the site.

hmmm  that's like having a sandwich of something you don't like... like liverwurst (no offense to those who like liverwurst)  How about a sandwich cookie... an oreo... have three compliments and no complaint!

I really like this forum
I've met some really nice people
I love reading what people have to type on here and have learned a lot

Now that's a good sandwich!

MazzyStar -- I agree that no liverwurst would be a better sandwich, but how can I quietly voice a tiny, itsy, bitsy, problem otherwise.

If I put just a little tiny bit of liverwurst on the sandwich with lots of other good stuff on it cover up the flavor, wouldn't that be better than just plain old liverwurst?

Thants for the FAST comment!

Hahaha  nah, don't think what you said is offensive or problematic at all so don't even worry bout it.  But no liverwurst even with the good stuff... i'll lose my appetite! (and my dinner) lol

It appears that the "Hwy 2" webcam needs resetting...  It's displaying a Friday night pic.

Is there something wrong with the web cam?   It was working just fine for me yesterday.   Today all I'm getting is the red x box.

Maybe it's me.   I'll try again.

All web cams are working.
Try rebooting your computer and if that doesn't help make sure that Java is loaded.
