Title: Wildfire News 2022
Post by: Elk on Jan 11, 22, 05:48:37 PM
This is our annual Wildfire News thread for 2022.
I thought I would start it out with a positive post since most of the posts in these threads are not always so positive.
Great opportunity for young women interested in a Fire Fighting Career and as a father of two daughters I thought I would pass along the information on this unique opportunity.

CAL FIRE @CAL_FIRE
CAL FIRE is proud to present Camp Cinder, a FREE 4-night sleep-away #firefighter camp for young women 14 to 18 in California! The deadline to register is April 24, 2022. To learn more, visit CAL FIRE website at: https://fire.ca.gov/camp-cinder

Somebody communicate this to fire officials. There's someone flying a drone in a white in a white pickup truck on right mountain road while the helicopters are flying around trying to fight the fire.

If you can see the person - call the CHP.  CHP is closing the WB 2 at Wright Mountain Rd. Or call SB Fire.

I communicated it to the CHP guy. He said he couldn't take care of it because he has to hold his post blocking the road. I talked to the guy myself and educated him that if they see his drone they will ground the helicopters. He said he understood.

I'm here at highway 2. It's not making very much progress West. There are firefighters at least halfway up the hillside. Correction, I can see one 3/4 of the way up the hillside.

To underscore the danger of what the firefighters are doing, I believe I just saw what they call a roller come binding down the hillside dangerously close to a number of personnel.

Not only is that person putting many lives in danger, he's committing a federal crime. These people infuriate me so much because fire officials have done so much work to spread awareness yet there are still brainless idiots who interfere with their drones.

He was landing it as we approached.  Not sure if someone already said something or what his intentions were after, but I'm glad I made sure he understood the ramifications.  Unfortunately, the water dropping helicopters stopped immediately at the exact time of sunset, so even if he were still thinking about flying nothing was up there as of when we left.

The spot fires we saw before we repositioned two hwy 2 and sheep creek where still up on high, but on the next ridge over.  Yes, to the northeast.  When we left, on the way out on LPC we could see that the east side of the fire had made decent progress down off the hillside and into the flats in the wash since we last saw from that angle.    Approx here: https://goo.gl/maps/PxyrSMEmd6jZa1zd6

Title: FIRE NORTHSIDE OF HWY 2
Post by: dave57 on Jun 12, 22, 08:08:40 AM
Woke up this morning to a message from a friend in Phelan telling me there is a fire in WW and asking if we are safe.
Jumped in the car and drove down HWY 2 and found the fire guys and gals have it shut down around Sheep Creek.
Fire in on the north side of HWY 2 and the helicopters are now, all over it.

Great to have Mt.High's water reservoirs full and the choppers able to use it.  Quick turnarounds mean everything to us.

Thanks so much to the fire folks and all they do.  Watching the choppers is amazing.

BE SAFE EVERYONE.  THIS COULD BE ONE LONG SUMMER AND WE ALL NEED TO DO OUR PART.

Dave

West Cajon Valley should be concerned, although the fact that there have been two fires in that area in recent times should be of some help.  There are some gullies with remnants of what the forest used to look like, but beyond those patches there's not a whole lot in the way of fuel.

As far as I can tell here all wired internet and cell service is still down. I'm a bit annoyed at the lack of communications from the carriers and ISPs. Pretty important that people know what's going on.

Hope so too. Can't think of anything much worse than an emergency like this and people being unable to access information.  The closure at the 2/138 is no longer on the CHP site incident page. I don't know if that means the 2 is open again.  Good luck up there. It's looking a lot better from down here in PH.

I haven't gone into town to test, but over here on Lodgepole the reception hasn't changed at all for Verizon or AT&T. The towers must be very short range.

Yea, I am sure the range isn't the best. As you can see from the photos, the towers are only like 15-20 feet in the air. Lots of terrain between them and Lodgepole. But at least people can drive toward town center and get decent internet/phone, instead of trying to find it around Wright Mountain Road, Table Mountain, or some other place outside of town

From what I have seen online, Hwy 2 is closed between Wright Mountain Road and Desert Front Road so Edison can make repairs on their infrastructure...and that means a possible power outage in Wrightwood from 8am-8pm on Thursday.

I can't directly verify exactly where the closures or road blocks are, but I can say:
   - Earlier today, I tried to drive down Wright Mountain Road to the 2, and they have cones blocking that the end of Wright Mountain Road so I had to turn around. I couldn't turn either direction from Wright Mountain Road onto the 2. From there, I back-tracked and left town via Lone Pine Canyon to the 138. Returned home the same way.
    - Also earlier today, my wife drove from home  (we are on the East side of town) to the Post Office...she didn't happen to go all the way down Sheep Creek, but took Thrush to Lone Pine to the 2.  Where Lone Pine hits the 2, she said there was no indication of closures.

So, I would say that there's a pretty good chance that if you want to come up to Wrightwood in the next few days, it will be necessary to take Lone Pine from the East, or drive past Mountain High from the West. But, once you are in town, it should be fairly easy to get to any house you need to get to. If part of the 2 is closed near your place, you might just need to take the side streets or maybe park and walk a little ways.

Does anybody by chance have additional info, or even just background knowledge on our local electrical system, that might help predict how today's power outage will unfold?

The original email I got indicated 8am-8pm, to replace/repair fire-related damege.

This morning, I heard some areas of town lost power around 7:40AM. My wife had heard the outages might be staged, one area of town at a time. We still had power until about 9:00AM, and I don't think power came back on for the 7:40AM folks, so I suspect that "staging" idea was incorrect.

Emails I'm getting today from SCE say: "Outage Reason: analyzing problem" and the estimated end-time has shifted from 10:00PM earlier today, to now 11:00PM.

Power went off about 8:30 here.  I expect they turned everything off in stages to prevent a surge.

Just got a text that says we're off until 11:00pm.

It seems like the damaged equipment would be in the fire area, not anywhere in town.

In the past, if there has been an outage of more than 8 hours, the cell towers all went down.

I don't know if there are enough cellular folks with the right stuff to prevent that, but we'll find out around 4:00pm.

Do we let nature take its course? Too soon?
This is what angers me about these fires, and the decisions calfire makes.  Those trees aren't coming back.  The climate has changed - trees like those pine trees and the joshua trees that 50+ years ago started growing at the edges of where they used to be able to exist wont grow back.  So, once it was mostly clear that the town wasn't in danger it was angering to see the water dropping helicopters leave at the exact minute of sunset, while there was still light.  Same thing with the bobcat fire where they threw their hands up and said they couldn't fly because of the inversion layer...which is ALWAYS present, and the fire destroyed miles of pristine forest.

Much of our local forest is a relic of the past, a awesome museum of artifacts, and neither the forest service nor calfire are funded or are capable of tending to it.

I went and drove by the 2 earlier today out of curiosity for what the utility companies were doing. SCE has a massive pole replacement operation going on over there. They were all along every pole working on them, including an impressively large crane lifting new poles in. Needless to say, they are definitely getting some work done there. Their original outage announcement mentioned helicopters too, presumably for the poles that are up on the hills.

Lone pine canyon is open,  has been for  2 days.  According to posts no structures were lost.  Hwy 2 was closed all day for repair work on power lines.  Was open last nite from about 7PM until this morning. Is still closed at this time.  Check Google maps as it gives a pretty up to date on closures.

I think over 24 hours is probably pushing it for the food in the fridge/freezer with no power. Also depends on how much you opened it.

I have a small digital outdoor thermometer that we put in the camper fridge so we know the temp inside without having to open it. Wish I would have thought to do that for this outage.

Just went up and down the 2 again to check on SCE's progress. Looks like they had to stop at some point. The only poles left to replace are the ones on the hills that require the helicopters, so I suppose that makes sense. Here's a few pictures of the poles in need of replacing: https://photos.app.goo.gl/uHyfo619RgCd7CwX8

SCE's outage site now estimates 3:00pm.

Just did a quick check of the fridge/freezer: food in freezer is still rock hard and ice cubes in the door are frozen still. Fridge stuff seems cold, but probably worth inspecting sensitive items once power is on.

We tend to over-stuff our fridge and freezer, so a lot of cold mass in there, and we have minimized opening it, which probably helped keep it all cold.

Fingers crossed power is back on by 3:00pm or earlier!

It is fascinating to me, how varied the information and experience of our residents is in a situation like this, depending on where one lives, etc.
I'm at Robin and Spruce. When I left the village Sunday, afternoon we had no internet, cell, or power and I was advised to evac. Kept up with the situation as much as possible from down the hill. Very difficult when the Forum and communication sources are down. When I returned yesterday, around 3:30pm, knowing the power had been out here since 8, I was advised to it would come on at 8, later changed to 11pm, so as much repair work as possible could be done. As it turned out the power was out overnight till just before 9 this morning for me. My gas had remained on.
The overnight outage was no problem for me: plenty of lanterns, candles and food not requiring refrigeration. I am deeply appreciative of the amazing work of the utility providers, esp. SCE and UIA since it was, and is, very windy and difficult environmental conditions. They worked through it to do the best they could to provide our services. Those with generators had their own power source. I could hear their humming around me. I admit is is not comforting knowing another start could happen at any time.
As to food safety, if the power returned within 12 hours of the initial outage on Sunday, and then was shut off for 24 hours yesterday, all is well here. I've only opened my fridge 2x for a peek since returning home. My ice and all other contents of the freezer are hard as a rock.
A shout out to Cheryl (tcarrabians) for all the info and updates she provided at this site. Thank you Cheryl.
It takes 100 years just for a Joshua Tree to reach maturity. They live well over 500 years w/the oldest recorded 1000 years old. It broke my heart in the video to see the fire consuming same.
Yes, reforesting is what we need. In the Andes, after the devastating fires, they came up with the strategy of sending out teams of dogs with seed sacks to reforest. Fab effort. The dogs can cover about 20 miles/day. We could easily do that here. There are options.
Seeing as this is only June, I fear this is going to be a long, hot, perilous, exhausting summer.
Thanks for this Forum and all who are providing lifesaving services, and valuable info and support. sagespirit

Sagespirit and all,   It took me a little bit to figure out that, for some reason, the Forum was not updating.  All the various maps or whatever I was able to post - I learned here. This Forum has always been my 'go to' when something is going on. I hope whatever I was able to share helped those of you that were able to read it and pass it on to others.

Wrightwood is quite organized compared to other communities. I would like to help build a communication system that can work for the entire Tri-Community in emergencies. A system that can disperse vital information when nothing works. I know all the work that folks in Wrightwood have done is a place to start. I know OES has a process and protocol.

I'm very glad for all of you 'up there' and those of us 'down over here' that this one is mostly behind us.  Cheryl

p.s. I have a number of little, baby Joshuas if we can figure out the permit process to donate them to help rebuild.

Important safety message from Southern California Edison

Dear Customer,

I am writing to you today to share information about the power outage on Thursday to restore service to the community of Wrightwood. I want to personally thank you for the support and patience shown by the Wrightwood community while SCE crews have been working in the area to repair our infrastructure damaged during the Sheep Fire. We know how difficult this has been for the community of Wrightwood and our thoughts are with you during the community's recovery.

It was anticipated that this outage was to begin at 8am and conclude at 8pm. Unfortunately, we ran into some unexpected challenges due to rugged terrain and the deep, solid rock foundation where pole replacements were necessary. Sometimes these things can occur, and it delays the work even with thorough preparation and planning of the project. The safety of our employees and our community is our number one priority and the additional time needed to make these repairs allowed our service crews to complete the work without incident.

I know this was impactful to our customers and we regret it was necessary to extend the outage. I thank you for understanding and support for the safety of our service crews.

We continue to work closely with local fire authorities and the local government to continue with restoration efforts as new areas become accessible to SCE. In fact, this Monday we plan to have helicopters in the area that will be continuing to support pole replacements. However, we do not anticipate the need to take an outage for this work to be done. In the meantime, if you see a downed power line, please stay away, and call 911.

I commit to you that we will continue updating our customers and our outage map as this important work continues. For more information, please visit our website at www.sce.com or call 1-800-655-4555.  You can also update your outage contact preferences on sce.com/outage should you wish to receive these important notifications through alternate channels such as SMS, email, and phone. If you or a member of your household relies on electrically operated medical or mobility equipment you may qualify for our Medical Baseline program.  To learn more about the program visit our website at sce.com/medicalbaseline.

$599 for the dish, $135/month for service, but it's "pay as you go" -- can be turned on and off.

That chopper has crossed over my property a number of times now, taking the same route it was a week ago. Wondering if the fire has picked up or if there is a new breakthrough. Unnerving.

Me and a few neighbors have been discussing going in on starlink dish, so that if an emergency happens in town we can just set it up and pay for a month of service. Plus having generators I feel like that would be good preparation for another event like this.

I have starlink and it works well.  They now have an RV version that is portable and you can start and stop membership as well.  Might be what you were looking for

Title: update on lightning-caused fires
Post by: Wrightwood on Jun 22, 22, 09:56:49 PM
Angeles National Forest update on lightning-caused fires:

As of late afternoon today, wildland firefighters at the Angeles National Forest had controlled three small lighting fires on the Angeles National Forest, specifically at Sulfur Springs, at Mt. Harvard near Henninger Flats, and west of Mt. Wilson. Los Angeles County Fire Department and Pasadena Fire Department assisted us on the Harvard Fire. We assisted Los Angeles County Fire Department and Los Angeles Fire Department on two additional fires.

Several additional small fires have been reported in/around the Angeles National Forest since late afternoon today.

Firefighters are focused on putting new fires out, monitoring areas that burned earlier today, and patrolling and responding to reports of smoke from the public.

It's amazing (and slightly irritating) how there can be a ton of fire news, and when things reach a certain point, everything goes silent.

I'm still interested in what's happening with the Bronco Fire, just not enough to drive down the pass on a Friday.

While I mentioned the Bronco Fire, it's a question in general.

One day a fire is big news, the next day it's dead silent, even before they reach 100% containment.

I've got questions too.  Like...how did the bobcat fire start? (yes, I googled, and there is no definitive answer)  And...what drives the lack of urgency on display from firefighters in the early stages of a fire?  The process by which information is shared with the public seems sketchy.  There is a severe lack of oversight.

As for this fire, the only thing that kept this fire from taking off was topography and wind direction - it was up and over that entire hillside in no time.  45 minutes before the first phoschek drop?  This reeks of dysfunction.
