Speaking of woodpeckers, how do you keep them from pecking the side of a cabin?  During one of the first few nights we spent in our new cabin, we were awaken by a very loud rat-tat-tat-tat on the outside of our bedroom wall. A very startling experience to say the least.  Inspection later that morning showed several holes bored halfway though the ceder siding of the cabin. What should I do to prevent furthur pecking?

You won't be able to stop them even if you replace the wood siding with metal. The flicker woodpeckers love to rat-tat-tat-tat on metal at 5:30am.

Move is your only option as they were here first.

Although you may want to warn BostonBob that he is the only one in the photos who is just begging for an OSHA violation.  ;D

So would these houses attract the flicker as well?

I can't believe he came over to my shop wearing a Lowes T-shirt unless they plan on sponsoring this project

We actually designed it for Flickers and the Acorn's appear to be taking on squatter rights.

Have your house checked for termites, which may attract woodpeckers.

or try

Ropel Liquid--This product will give whatever it is sprayed on an extremely bitter taste. You will find this a good tool to keep squirrels from cutting the wood into your attic. The squirrel will find the sprayed area too bitter to chew. Also works on woodpeckers and rabbits. Use as needed.

Looks like the new home continues to pass inspections inside and out.
Here's a video clip from this morning of the prospective occupant taking the first interior peek.

Notes:
(Some people will need to download the file to their hard disk before viewing the video. The video will appear as black and white due to the interior of the house being dark. It's viewable because of the infrared camera used.)

Interesting question.
At this point there is not a computer uploading images of the woodpecker cam. When more activity takes place with the Woodpeckers moving in, images will be uploaded.

Adult discretion will be needed since we have a view inside their bedroom  :cop:

All motion is being recorded on a DVR unit just as 2 cameras on the Steller's nest are being recorded along with the guzzler live cam and some others. Additional video footage is being taken while the Acorns are working on the main entrance.

Is there a link where we can watch the "walk through" and 'move-in' live?

There have been frequent visits and the Acorn Woodpeckers do have 1-2 broods per year. Breeding is cooperative in small groups of up to 16 birds. Communal ; several females per nest.

Very cool. But will they stay?

Reproduction
Mating systems of Acorn Woodpeckers range from monogamy in some populations to cooperative polygyny. Generally, Acorn Woodpecker groups contain 1-7 male breeders that compete for matings with 1-3 egg-laying females. In groups that contain more than one female breeder, the female cobreeders lay their eggs in the same nest cavity. There is often extreme reproductive competition between joint-nesting females, who regularly destroy eggs laid by their cobreeders. After females have established a normal laying sequence, egg destruction stops. Reproduction competition between males is displayed by attempts by a male to disrupt copulation between another pair. Courtship and pair-bonding displays are absent.

Nest cavities are drilled into large dead or living limbs in trees or snags, which may contain granaries. The inside of the nest cavity is lined with fresh wood chips, and nest holes may be used repeatedly for several seasons. Average clutch size for a group with more than one female is five white, elliptical eggs. The average clutch size for a singleton female is four eggs. Eggs are laid at approximately 24 hour intervals. The incubation period is 11 days and both male and female breeders incubate. Once the chicks have hatched, all group members participate in providing food. Nestlings leave the nest after 30-32 days.

Last night an Acorn Woodpecker spent the entire night in the bird house.
Don't know if the bird was thrown out of the house for a night or checking the overnight sleeping conditions prior to moving in.

While the bird is sleeping it was hanging on to the entrance hole and  tucks it's head under it's wing during most of the nights stay.

The Woodpeckers have been in the house a good number of times during the past couple weeks.

You should also check out the Nature Cam at the top of the page. The bird has returned again tonight and the livecam image is now from inside the bird house.

Don't expect to see a great deal of activity but he/she does ruffle feathers, scratch and changes poistions every 5 or 10 minutes.

I can see that it's rearranged itself, because the feathers are all different.

Yes this makes three nights in a row.

During the day I moved the camera towards the opening so we can see a little more of the bird as it hangs on and when they enter or leave the house.

The opening or entrance to the house is at the top of the screen image you're viewing.

This afternoon some bird/creature got inside the house and hit the camera. I replayed video and could not tell what moved the camera but it drastically changed.

I had to put up a ladder, remove the top to the acorn house and reposition the camera. That was close to to the time that the bird usually occupies the house. I'm confident the bird will be back.

None in the bird nest area. I think that won't be until spring if it follows the past pattern.

The acorn woodpeckers are the ones we are watching as they appear ready to do something in the birdhouse with a camera in it.

Today another woodpecker house with livecam has been added to the system. For the time being the Nature Cam (Residential) rotates between three livecams- Guzzler Cam - Acorn Woodpecker Cam - New Woodpecker Cam.

Hopefully we will get Flickers to move into the new house. The house is the same shape and size as the Acorn Woodpecker House but for now I've got the camera pointing towards the entrance - rather than the bottom of the house.

Can't put anything by you Bob. I'm having problems with the main DVR and had to redirect the camera feed to record some of the activity that's been taking place.

The new bird house is the hot property as the Flickers have been working on the opening, Acorns have been going in and out along with a Nuthatch. It's going to be interesting to see who moves in.

The original Woodpecker house is occupied every night by an Acorn and many in and out visits during the day.

Here's some Acorn activity in the new house:

Yes and I am so stoked! It is just way cool to see a big, beautiful flicker on a 20" monitor, pecking away, customizing his house.

As for the video, I am going to need some help with that. I will convert the VHS to a DVD later tonight and then I will need help getting it posted.

Okay, now I have proof that the female flicker is around. I had only seen the male go in the house before (it is hard to tell who is who on the video camera inside the flicker house as it is only black and white because of the low light). The male has the bright colored whisker like marks on his face and you can see on these pictures, the female does not. Leave it to the female to come in like gangbusters and rearrange stuff. She has been dumping out the wood shavings big time this morning.

Excuse the quality of the photos as they were taken at an angle through our bedroom window.
