I know they are begining the new phase of house lots in Pacific Crest. They started some grading the other day.

Bull dozer work in the area was requested jointly by SB County Fire, the Forest Service and Wrightwood Fire Safe Council.
The area below Pinion Mesa was identified in the Wrightwood Community Wildfire Protection Plan as having the most extreme fire potential in Wrightwood.
In a nutshell: much of this work (rough grading) would have been done in the future as Locarno Drive (not Laredo), Pacific Crest Drive and Zermatt Drive will all join into the new Wright Mountain Road.
The land owners in cooperation with concerned parties listed above have been planning this work for months and it has been discussed at many Wrightwood Fire Safe Council meetings.

Sorry for the confusion....I was speaking of Lacarno Drive(opps spelled wrong).
It didn't take long after I wrote this that it appeared to be the new road you mentioned. Can't stop progress I guess!
You mentioned "extreme fire potential". Is that because of all the brush that existed? Have they been concern with this area prior to the development of Pacific Crest?
I will be happy to know there is another access when the bridge is out...was that an issue as well?
Who does one contact to inquire about lots for sale. I have ask one local real estate office and they didn't know (?).

Of all the areas of Wrightwood, the homes that look over the undeveloped area to the north are perhaps at greatest risk for wildfire. Take a hike down to where the work is being done and look back up. What you will see is massive amounts of old growth chaparral that grows right up to and under the decks of the homes overlooking the valley. Remembering that fire will race up that slope with flame lengths over 100 foot when it crests the top and you can see the concern. In a perfect world, the homeowners would have the slope cleared down a hundred feet or so. Putting in fuel breaks at the bottom will help stop a fire from making it to the slope and thus the homes.
Pacific Crest development is off the edge of the ridgeline and does not have the contigious fuels that exist to the north.

Thats where are house is being built. I was very concerned about the fire load in this mid range channel that would deliver the fire to are front doors in a matter on minitues. The work that is being done will help.

ok like I am confused...uh what...... fuel modification-well I think we need more of that! There is still loads of brush from this private property right up to the side of several houses/property line (within a few feet).
I thought brush was to be 30 ft away from structures? Or is there no fire safety rule for that?
True... There is still hazardous fuels below the houses at top of Pinon Mesa. This is a complex set of circumstances that has been gone over at many Fire Safe Council meetings. The 30 ft rule has recently been changed by the state, then the county to 100ft and can be more in certain instances. Unfortunately natural vegetation does have some exemptions.

Isn't this where the new roads are going combining Pacific Crest or Basil with Larcarno and Zermatt - out to hwy 2? When are the those roads projected..anyone know?
The three roads you mention have been extended and will join into the new Wright Mountain Road. Wright Mountain Road would have already been started but Caltrans would not allow it during cold weather periods due to the asphalt that will merge or blended into Hwy2. The road project will be out for bid very soon and should be started/complete by summer 2006.
I must admit what interesting timing! How come nothing was done prior to now (I know just be thankful)? It didn't just grow recently.. been putting lots of people in jeopardy for some time now. If it was my property, I would have gotten a notice once a year from the fire dept.
The fire hazard has existed for years and has been discussed but no one was able to get the ball rolling. When the Fire Safe Council, SB County Fire, ANF and SBNF cooperatively put an effort together to get the hazard reduced things started happening. The owner of the property below East Canyon and Pinon Mesa also joined in and footed the bill for bulldozer work.
As I previously stated the bulldozer work accomplished a few things at once. It provided rough grading of the 3 road extensions and one additional East-West Rd that will join into Wright Mtn Rd. It also provids a major fuel break running East and West that would allow fire fighters a chance to protect structures in the Pacific Crest Estates. The bulldozer work also included grading that follows the contour at the base of Pinon Mesa which provides another fire break below structures.
That slope below the structures on Pinon Mesa will require additional fuel modifications to help reduce the risk of wildfire. The fuel modifications to the slope area could not be started without clearing the heavy brush below first, as a staging area is needed to chip the slash remove from the slope.

This has been discussed at numerous MAC meetings. The owner or developer is also footing part of the bill for the new road, offering the property to the county for the road and offering property for a park in the area from my understanding.
Good observations Batnett, local builders need a road and the govt. does the work. It was needed, but maybe the builders should have paid for it, or at least gave me a deal on a mini-mansion. ::)

firefightersteve offered to give the us a hand by taking aerial photos of the area when the wind subsides. Then we can show before and after photos where the bulldozer work has helped with fuel breaks.

How much of the property between the Mesa and the Levels is privately owned by the people that are building the road?

I recieved a letter yeasterday, If I remember correctly, it said there were 60 acres going to be divided into 90 parcels. I will have to go over it when I get a chance, it was for property owners effected by the build.

That type of letter goes to property owners within a certian distance of the project.

Surfer Dude stopped by last night and gave me a copy of his letter. He asked me to post it. I talked to another resident and she did not get one either... I wonder why??? We will all be affected by this on Locarno....
My biggest concern with 96 lots and homes going in is the water. We don't have enough water each summer what will happen with 96 new homes?????

Thanks for posting the letter Angelwolf. I'm off of Zurich and no letter either. I think everybody over here will be affected by this build, and the roads going in. Still not sure if I'm happy about the roads yet. We'll have a lot more snow traffic when people get frustrated with the gridlock on hwy 2. But it will be nice not to get cut off from town everytime it rains. :-\

I live a stone's throw away from the Pac Crest sign...No letter for me.....I am directly affected....but I am selling soon anyway and have enjoyed the profit I made thus far on my home.

I just bought a house on Locarno which I should be in sometime around the 22nd of this month so I am sure this building will affect my family and I as well. I think there will obviously be pro's and con's of the road. The pro's are another road to exit the town when the weather gets back but when it does snow anytime near a weekend I can see that road being filled with double parked cars and snow players just like Hwy 2 all the way up to Mtn High. I do not know anything about the WW water situation but it sounds like if there are issues now, wait till 90 ore homes go in. Just my thought....

The county code specifies a given distance in feet for neighboring parcels that must be notified.

When I've been down there looking at the bulldozer cuts I though it was very close to the drawing.

One person in Phelan killed a project in his neighborhood by sabre rattling. How do I know that to be true? I was the one holding the sabre.

This process could still be held up in court. Does anyone want to take this road?

It's hard to believe there was no other opposition. I guess all of us (including me) thought someone else would be there to voice our concerns. This will affect everyone in Wrightwood with the added traffic, etc.

I love how the school district got criticized for not planning ahead ofr population growth in an area that is bounded on most sides by national forest. The county just wants more tax dollars. And don't think any of that money is coming into Wrightwood. The county could care less about Wrightwood.
