My husband is coming up N4 and says there is a fire off to his left about 2 miles. Any information? Says he just got passed by his second fire unit.
-
He just got home and said from what he could determine it was in the vacinity of the 138 and 18 split and and San Bernardino and Forest Service Units passed him on their way down.
-
There's a fire called the Ramp Fire that's off the I15. Southbound near escape ramp.
-
My sources tell me that I-15 fire is quite small, although I saw a fair amount of engines and firefighters as I drove past.
Crazy weather today. Microbursts causing zero visibility in parts of Hesperia.
-
The fire is putting up a lot of smoke.
-
-
-
A total of 6 crews and a full complement of aircraft requested
-
The fire blew up and its across the lines. The high tension lines are arcing. We had to get a lot of people out of there, but we got the crews out safely.
-
Sounds like we have two fires going!
-
Start two type-3 strike teams

Good afternoon.
I am sorry if I sound completely inane here, but is this fire on/near 138?
My husband has to go down the hill in a while, he came up at 1pm through the flagging area and needs to go back about 3:30. Is 138 open? The freeway? He can go around but if the I15 is closed too there won't be much point.
Again, I am sorry if I sound dense but I can't figure out all the CHP speak. I do know I am seeing a heck of a lot of billowing black smoke that has me worried for anyone living over that way.
Thank you.
-
Request all North Desert BC's to report for duty.
-
lostkiwi,
The best I can tell is that traffic heading down Lone Pine Canyon to I15 and headed southbound should be OK.
Conditions are changing quickly with mutiple fires in progress.
-
TRAFFIC BACKED UP TO 395, HEAVY TRAFFIC REF FIRE
-
Railroad's been notified. They're shutting the tracks down. There's one engine backing out of the smoke now. As soon as they can be reopened, we need to notify them
-
Yikes.
Thanks WW. Actually he will be coming from by Rick's Cafe, maybe he should just forget it and go around. (Phelan Rd to Main and/or 395 to the 15 south?)
Thank you for your updates, they are awesome. It is very good of you to take the time to keep us informed.
Funky Gorilla, great (if very disturbing) picture. Every time I look out it looks bigger and blacker.
-
Lostkiwi
If he must get through, sooner would be better than later. If he must go through the closer it may already be to late, as there is s report s a fire at Sheepcreek and 138. Good luck
-
-
15 south may be a hard ride so to the fire at the ramp.
-
Structures are looking good in the West Cajon Valley.
-
Helicopter requesting that Lost Lake be secured as a water source.
-
-
I just drove down lone pine. The fire as of about 10 min ago was concentrated behind the Mormon rocks opposite of 138, there was a smoldering trail from the truck ramp to the rocks. It appeared to be moving west through west Cajon
-
Gabe said multiple fires, largest several hundred acres moving toward West
Cajon Valley. Structure protection underway but no structures currently
being threatened. Moving quickly due to erratic winds. However, he said
rain heavy over area and they're hoping it might reduce fire.
-
Request was just made to close the 138 offramp

Here is the fire as seen from Phelan, Baldy Mesa/Phelan rd area

Lost kiwi, I don't think Cajon Pass from any approach is viable at this point. Better take Pearblossom Highway westward and go from there.

KW just reported that she's on the 138 at Mormon Rocks. Smoke is currently going nearly straight up and drifting west. Fire is behind turkey ranch and Jadestone Pet Lodge. Lots of emergency vehicles in the area.
-
Calindy,
Wildman also reports windy conditions in Horse Canyon.
-

-
Incident Command has been setup at USFS Mormon Rocks Fire Station.
-
Unconfirmed report that a structure has been lost.
-
Air attack calls the fire about 400 acres
-
Making good progress
-
Type 1 helicopters can be refueled at Mormon Rocks one at a time
-
ABC 7 News said that it was 10% contained, full containment expected tonight.
-
Is it possible to get to Wrightwood going SB on the 15?
-
If you go to Road Conditions it states that 138 is closed from Hwy 2 to I-15 due to a brush fire but a detour is available.
-
I guess if the 15 is open, I'll try that and take off on 395. If it isn't open, I'll go around to 173 to Hesperia to Oak Hills.
-
Oops, sorry. Wrong thread.!
-
The detour they are talking about is probably the same as for the closure.
Does anyone know if Lone Pine is useable?
-
As of about 4:00, Lone Pine was open. 138 was open from I-15 to Lone Pine - closed west of that point.
-
Thank you. That helps a lot. :)
-
Per channel 7 News:
Ramp fire has consumed several structures.
(I am assuming that structures mean out buildings)

I just returned from the Ramp Fire.
Air resources dipping out of Lost Lake, a private pond off Hwy 138 and retardant refills hit the rapidly moving brush fire hard.
Fire size is approximately 450 acres. There is a threat to the Cajon Valley.
According to SB County Fire Chief Tim Wessel the erratic winds had caused the fire to spot ahead so quickly. One mobile home and and out structure may have been lost but the canyon area is still too hot to send crews in.
-
Is the 15 still closed either NB or SB at this point? the 138?
Thx
-
The I15 has never been closed except for the #4 lane southbound.
Assume that Hwy 138 is closed between Hwy 2 and Lone Pine Canyon Rd until someone reports otherwise.
Lone Pine Canyon Rd between Wrightwood and I15 is open.
-
Thanks, Wrightwood :)

Gee, I just realized, I haven't seen the Turkey Ranch's name for so long, when we first came up here it still had turkeys!

Ditto, lostkiwi!
I always use LPC from/to the 15, and can't remember how long it's been since I drove by that ranch.
So Wrightwood, at this point are you pretty confident that LPC to the 15 will be do-able in the morning? I'll check in here before I leave, but I need to allow extra time if I have to do the Largo Vista thing. That means getting up earlier - UGH!

I would think that's a safe bet but with any wildfire you never know for sure.

-
Um.... so is the fire still going or is it out?
-
Fires are "contained" when there is a line around them.
Fires are "controlled" when every little bitty ember is out.
It takes a while.
-
Ok but is the ramp fire out or not?
-
-
What Nolena said. The Ramp fire was over 400 acres around five and estimated at 10 per cent contained. There will be crews on the fire for three or four days at least. There were lots of aircraft available in the area because of the Sawtooth/Millard Complex that were sent over for initial attack.
-
oh ok
-
Thanks Nolena and Wildman !
This fire won't be completely out for days or possibly weeks. Tomorrow work will include at least 1 helicopter to help with hot spots and a good number of people on the ground. (I would expect more aircraft but only heard about 1 being scheduled so far)
The weather will play a large factor as high winds like today could rekindle hot spots. Sunday is also predicted to be the worst day for thunderstorms in the area.
The Ramp fire was really a two ignition fire according to Chief Wessel. The fire originated in the runaway truck ramp area by mechanical means. (vehicle fire, sparks, etc) Fire fighters had a line around the fire and thought it was going to be taken care of. Then lightning either hit a power line or transformer nearby and started the fire back up. If fire fighters were not in the area during the lightning strike things could have been a lot worse.
-
Hey Jim! Are you home now or still amoung the missing ;D
-
do we'll think well have to evac out of the area? is it that bad or am I over exaggerating. Also what is the Karma thing on peoples profile?
-
What area are you in?
The best way to get current information is right here in this topic and listen to the online scanner.
-
Well do you think Wrightwood would need evac? I dont know which way the fire is heading. Also why does it say I have karma -1
-
There is no indication of Wrightwood being in danger of the Ramp Fire .
-
-
-
:2thumbsup: Thanks Wrightwood! John Aziz...you are amazing and all you other folks who take the time to keep us informed and up to date. Y'all are what makes Wrightwood so very wonderful. Great photos and thanks for setting me straight on contained vs controlled. Thanks x a million!

Wildman is a civilian today and not working the Ramp Fire. He was paying close attention to this fire as his ranch was upwind about 5 miles from it.
We are fortunate to have many forum members who are experienced in emergency services. Both Wildman and Nolena are former fire fighters.

Wrightwood is right. I am on days off and trying to catch up here on the place. I did get numerous calls from the media folks I work with regarding Ramp but I don't free lance as an Info Officer. I enjoy what I do with the Fire Management Teams...they compensate me for my time and I get to work with the most dedicated and intense folks in the world doing something of value. It's great fun!
-
There are never words to express what valuable assets folks like Wrightwood, Wildman and Nolena are at times like these! Thanks for all you do, and for always making stressful situations a little less stressful because of your insightful information. I've lived all over the world, but Wrightwood is my home, and the BEST!

I just saw on the Channel 5 news that the Davis Ranch is completely gone, all structures. That had been here for a very long time.
Thank you to all who are keeping us so well informed.

You had some great photos of Air Attack 509 with Stan Kabota from the Forest Service. The helicopter is a surplus Army AH-1 Cobra gunship. They took off the armament and armor and added state of the art tv camera and FLIR (Forward looking infrared radar) plus a laser designator that can give exact gps location 16,000 meters out. There are two ships that are identical and were built for next to nothing by the Forest Service. They are a dual platform...they can fly as Helco (helicopter coordinator) or Air Attack (coordinating fixed wing) or provide the Incident Commander with real time video and FLIR images. It means the IC doesn't have to get in a helicopter, fly around and not be able to see through smoke and try to find where they are on a blowing map. The FLIR looks right through the smoke. The ship was used real time on the Millard to save lives when our fire blew up and the IC made his decision to pull Hot Shots out after watching fire behaviour real time that indicated it was not safe for troops. The program is called Fire Watch.
-
I saw one of those copters yesterday around 6:00 p.m., as I was going east on the 138, from Largo Vista and it was a beauty! It appeared it had gotten water from the aquaduct and was heading to the Llano fire.
-
Been reading these threads and watching the news about homes being burned in the fires. Since most of these people know they live where they could lose their homes to a wildfire, why don't they clear their weeds and brush? With all the publicity, you would think that would have been done in the Spring.

You now meet the new state requirement. And you are one smart cookie for going beyond the minimum. Good Job Funky! Make your place safe and make it safe for those who will come to protect it.
:2thumbsup: and a "k" to you!

I drove by the area where the Ramp Fire started and couldn't help but notice the burnt weeds and brush right next to the shoulder.
I guess my question is when will Caltrans start being held responsible to clear weeds and brush next to the roadway? How many more fires in this area will it take? Runway Fire, Ramp Fire, Louisiana Fire, Bluecut Fire and so many along Kenwood, Cleghorn and Sierra I'm not sure anyone knows all the names.

Interesting thought.
Are you suggesting that CalTrans should clear along both sides of all the road way that they are responsible for each spring and haul away the weeds and brush?
How far from the road way should they clear and could you hazard a guess how much this might cost and how many folks will need to hired? It's a grand idea but do you really think they will belly up for the thousands of miles of road way they are responsible for?

That made me laugh... Telling Caltrans they need to do more work would be like telling wrightwood, angelwolf, firefightersteve to stop talking pictures! ;D
