Title: Are Deer Putting You At Risk?
Post by: Chesslike on Oct 24, 06, 02:56:25 PM
Here is an interesting article relating to how much damage deer vs autos do every year. There have been a number of locals that have hit deer on N4, Hwy 2 and Lone Pine Canyon Road. According to the Game Warden up here, there were 7 deer killed on Lone Pine during a short period at the beginning of this year and I am sure there have been more since then. You might want to keep this information in the back your head as you find yourself picking up speed on one of the above mentioned roads.

Deer Alert or Deer Whistle

Here are two on line sources. Also check Walmart and Target.

I hit a deer a few years back, not on lone pine, but driving cross country.  THe first thing I noticed was the thump, then his eyes passing the windshield.

Deer will naturally hide from a car, as they think it may be a predator.  Then, out of fear, they jump at the last minute, missjudging the speed of the car.  Since they are hiding from your car, on purpose, as nature has trained them, its almost impossible to avoid them.  It's just hit and miss.

Deer Hide from a car? Not our deer. I was doing Bighorn Sheep telemetry all this summer on highway 2. In a three week period I encountered seven deer at night on Highway 2. Most of them within a mile of Grassy Hollow. Not one of them ran from the head lights, or the engine noise, or me rolling down my window and talking to them from 50 feet away. Only when I crept the car to within about ten yards of them did they finally move off the road. And then most of them moved only a few feet into the brush and stood watching me curiously.

I hit a deer with a car that I really loved.  The deer and the  "car love" all unfortunately ended at the same time. The car was totaled. I was on the 5fwy near Michael Jackson's ranch, the accident spun me completely around.  I had to drive quickly towards traffic to escape to the side.  I hit it at dusk, a common time for these accidents.  The gigantic doe came out of nowhere.  It seems to be real common occurence but I feel like I escaped with my life.

I can remember driving through Utah on I-70 towards Denver and seeing literally hundreds of dead deer by the side of the highway, right around the Parowan area. And Utah isn't even listed in the top 10 states for Deer vs Auto collisions. Must be quite a problem.

Maybe some of these hunters in Wrightwood would be better off mounting their scope on the hood of their car instead? ;D

This link should give you pause as you speed down Lone Pine Canyon Road. It shows what happens when a car hits a deer at 70 MPH. WARNING: IT IS NOT VERY PRETTY AND EXTREMELY GRAPHIC.

People have been putting deer whistles on their cars/motorcycles for years. Bottom line, deer stops looks POW. They don't work....don't waste your money.

If you saw the movie pulp fiction, the front seat of the deer crash car looked like the back seat of Jules and Vincent's car before "The Wolf" came and straightened things out.

Friend of mine hit a moose when she lived in northern New Hampshire.  Totaled the car, killed the moose and she's lucky she lived to tell the tale.

Kinda looks like the fellow that set himself on fire and jumped off the Cherry Overpass on the 10 freeway.  He landed head first in a small toyota heading Eastbound at 70mph.  Tough to tell who was who.
