Just found one in my downstairs bathroom! Anyone know how to keep them out of the house??

Just get these for your house:
1) Arizona Wind Spider
2) Bats, geese, chickens
3) Woodpeckers
4) Roadrunner
5) Desert Shrew
6) Elf Owl
7) Western Coastal Whiptail Lizzard
8 ) Some cats

YAAGH!!! :P
I realize that was not very helpful and I'm sorry, but I would just have up and died. I HATE those things. In your house, yeesh... :-X

Hey SD,
Hubby wants to know where to get a roadrunner since the cats aren't working out to well for us??

Haven't seen any personally, but I'm reading a murder mystery right now, in which the BAD guy has a tankful of 5 really nasty ones. I don't know much about scorpions, except that I don't want them near me either. I hate this dude in the novel, because of the scorpions...... The book is called "The Crush" by Sandra Brown. Funny how you can get to know the characters in a book you are reading, and love or hate them......

Our local scorpions are quite harmless and their sting is often less then a bee sting. That being said, if you just came back from Southern Arizona and a Bark Scorpion hitched a ride, the sting could be fatal.
To find them at night, use a black light. They glow fluorescent.

OK what is southern Arizona? We spent Labor Day weekend in Phoenix! I knew that the local ones are harmless, but I still don't like them hanging out in my house.

Here is something on the Bark Scorpion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centruroides_exilicauda
Only reason I knew it was watching a Discovery Channel program on Bugs that Bite.

There are over 2000 species of scorpion, and of those less then 10 are considered deadly. As Wildman said, the closest to us is the bark scorpion from Arizona into Mexico. If you know where to look they are quite plentiful down there, as I just came back on a reptile/ invertebrate collecting trip from there and brought back about 30 without really even looking for them (they'll be sold to responsible collectors, don't worry). Luckily, although the bark scorpion has potent venom, it has a tiny stinger that can have a hard time piercing skin; especially if it hits a calloused area like the sole of a foot or on the hands.
Our native scorpions are quite harmless and in fact make a fun and unusual pet. They also rid your house of other pests so can be seen as beneficial. As we get into winter months, you probably won't see too many more anyway.
Good luck!

Fantastic pets indeed! I just would not recommend the bark scorpion for a pet. Not because of their bite, but because of their bark. Ours kept the neighbors up all night and we finally had to get rid of it.

Emperor scorpions make much better pets. They're extremely friendly and don't make any noise!

Reptile Bob, you don't live next door to WWDREAMIN do you???

We just found one in our house tonight also. First one we've ever seen up here. It kind of freaked us out until I read Wildman's post above. :)
I couldn't find any useful information on our local scorpions, either in our field guides nor on the internet. What more do you know about them? What's their full or scientific name? Any links or info you have on them would be great.
Glad to hear that they're nothing to worry about.

Reptile Bob lives in Orange County. He's not responsible for any scorpions up here.
