Hmmmm..... I have hikers who will need updates on this. Some have relatives who want to drive out Highway 2 to meet their hikers.

Angeles Crest Highway, Hwy 2, is closed just West of the Big Pines VIS between Grassy Hollow and Islip Saddle due to a large sink hole that appeared in the road. CalTrans is still working on it. The cavern is larger underneath than the hole in the asphalt. (Photo courtesy of Ron Heinig, REC-31)

Doesn't Caltrans have the ability to do repairs of this type without a contractor? Seems like they used to be able to handle something of this nature with their own crews.  ::)

Sheesh... tell me this isn't a government operation.

And God help us if a Bighorn Sheep falls into the hole.. knowing them, they'll proclaim the hole to be "protected area" now, and it'll never get fixed.

I'm hearing that the closure has moved back to Big Pines Road, so SR2 is closed between SR39 and Big Pines. I'm also hearing that it may open by 7/31. That's preliminary as I still haven't heard from our construction engineers...but I'm hopeful!

Our website states road is closed at Vincent Gulch which is 5.3 miles west of Big Pines (incorrect).  The road is actually closed at Grassy Hollow (pm 77.3) which is 2.6 miles from Big Pines.  The closed gate at Highway 39 is correct.

The plan now is to secure the road enough so we can open it to one way traffic control, which will be managed through flagged during the day and automated signals during the night. The goal is to get the road open by August 8.

Repairs will require extensive drain work, so it may be a month before the road is fully opened. At least you'll have access again.

Here's from the construction engineer:

We ran into a little snag in retaining an available automatic traffic system device and we've were delayed by two rain events this week. However, we have some contingencies that we are in acting to keep us on schedule we are working today to make up for the inefficiency caused by the weather, so we can open the road on Monday and we will utilize steel plates over the compromised area of the roadway, so the entire travelway can be in use during the non work hours (nights & holidays). While repair work continues during the work shift hours.

"Our plan remains the same we will open on Monday evening for through traffic, and allow traffic during the work shift utilizing flaggers and/or other acceptable safe measures."

Heads up, Cal Trans has begun work on the sink hole near mile marker 75 which is near Wrightwood. They will be opening up to one lane during construction this week. During the weekend and night hours they will place steel plates over the construction to replace the culvert and repair the surface. Here is a direct quote from the Media Relations and Public Affairs office:

"We ran into a little snag in retaining an available automatic traffic system device and we've were delayed by two rain events this week. I'm including a photo Shot by one of the volunteers at Grassy Hollow that overlooks the road Thanks Sabrina !

The crews will be unable to open the road today (one day earlier) as the rains last week and a plant delay for the paving materials have caused snags. They are working hard to get the road open around noon tomorrow, which I believe the originally communicated opening date.

Remember that this is simply to support one lane so we can safely reopen the road to one way traffic control while the contractor works on the other lane. Work will continue for another month or so.
