Field Day 2008
« on: Jun 26, 08, 10:05:55 PM »
It's that time once again. Field Day is here. The original purpose of field day was to test an Amateur Radio Operators ability to get out of his shack, away from the electrical grid, away from permanently mounted antennas, and see what they could do to set up a station under field conditions. Using a temporary antenna and battery power. No we have solar and small generators, but you could also run a station off your car battery. In Wrightwood we have a great opportunity to go see some field day set ups done by radio clubs.
The Southern California QRP society set up on the Zuni loop at Table Mt. Campground. Other clubs, and individuals, use Blue Ridge and Guffy campgrounds for field day. So if you are not operating field day, at least take a drive on Saturday and go see what can be done.
BTW QRP means low power opeartion. These guys work across the country and around the world on only 5 watts!

While patrolling on Saturday, almost the whole Blue Ridge campground was filled with HAMs and their radio stations.  All types of antennas and radio configurations seem to be in use.  They had installed about a 30 foot portable mask with Ham antennas in the middle of the campground.  There was a lot of chatter on those radios.
