Names of the turnouts along Hwy 2
« on: Nov 26, 02, 10:55:14 AM »
CalTrans has given names to the turnouts along Highway 2. For example, Blue Cut at mile marker LA 76.11, is one I mentioned in a previous post.

Does anyone know the origin or meaning of these names ?
Coor Pender at SB 04.50
Stock Pile at SB 03.33
212 at  LA 68.27
200 at  LA 68.07
Elly Bar at LA 66.13

Full list of names is here: http://tchester.org/sgm/places/sr2_log.html

Coor Pender is named for Richard Coor Pender. Mr. Coor Pender was a pioneer member of the community, settling in what is called Oak Springs Valley. He came to the area surveying for the railroad spur that was to come up to the white rock deposits (mine) at the 5000 ft level adjacent to Hwy 2 (Desert Front Road). The railroad was not built (but the grade was completed in West Cajon Valley (on the east side) and traces of it still can be made out if you look carefully). He developed roads in the Oak Springs Valley and was responsible for the Oak Springs CSA for water happening. He was a fascinating chap and knew a great deal about Southern California and local water issues.

Between Desert Front Road and Wrightwood - going up the mountain, on the right hand side....forgive me, I'm going to describe it as best as I can....before the snow playing area on the left - where people ride motorcycles during the summer...

heading into Wrightwood, you pass Desert Front Road and the water tanks - the next turnout on the right hand side - I think they might have an emergency phone in it now....we used to bring lawn chairs there after school - I'm going to be in Wrightwood this Sunday - I'll tell you exactly where it is on Sunday - I'll post it right here....

yea at hess and the 138 if you look out to the left if your going to the 15 or to the right if your going to highway 2... its still there and the tunnel is suppose to still be there at the top of the cut out for the railroad... it looks like a steep road on the side of a mountain its pretty neat that after more than 100 years its still there...
