Wow! I know this planning is for very large areas, but personally I am kind of curious - we recently had the new Edison "Smart Meter" installed. Maybe I'll write Edison and see if they would be able to configure the new meters to coordinate resistance against any surges due to transformer failure. I read awhile back that many neighborhoods have transformers 30 years old - they replace them as they can, but I suspect that our rural areas may come a bit later on a replacement schedule. I'm still a little uninformed on how smart the 'smart meters' are anyway.
In the meantime I'm looking up so-called "solar generators" - basically small solar-powered battery backup systems - since I would dearly love to be all solar someday. But I'm sure glad that science is getting plans in place against solar storms.
