Simplex in & around Wrightwood
« on: May 24, 07, 05:51:32 PM »
This topic is designed to log local simplex connections

Wildman (KG6ZER) finally bought an HT and so far we've done a few tests on simplex.

All tests were done using Clint's 2 meter simplex frequency:
147.570 Tone 100

Wrightwood - 10 watts - Yaesu FT8800R with Diamond X510 Antenna - Base Heath Canyon

Wildman - 5 watts - Kenwood TH-F6 with stock antenna:

1) West side of Horse Canyon near Hwy 138 - 4 air miles - strong signal

2) Phelan & Sheep Creek Rds (True Value parking lot) - 6 air miles - good signal

3) I tried using 5 watts on a Kenwood TH-F6 with a Comet HT224 antenna and was not able to connect with Wildman at the True Value store and the base of Heath Canyon.

KG6ZEU and I work 220 simplex from Victorville to Wrightwood frequently. Works from Bear Valley and 395 pretty much all the way home. This is with Susan using an HT on low power (1/2 watt) through a three element Yagi that points to Quartzite Mt.

How about someone in Wrightwood and the "Grey Ghost" chatting on Simplex?

This afternoon I heard station W6RO on Wrightwood Simplex #2 - 145.520 so I decided I'd find out where W6RO was located. After a few minutes of trying, as there were other stations doubling one another,  I made contact with W6RO. It turns out that the control operator was W7FTT (Jim) from Wrightwood and volunteers monthly aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

The signal was a little scratchy but very clear! We talked for about 10 minutes and were both surprised on how well the simplex connection worked. Jim believed he was at 35 watts with a yagi antenna on the Queen Mary. I was using 50 watts on a Yaesu FT8800 using a Diamond dual band X510M antenna (8.3db on 2 meter).
