Help from Rose experts
« on: Oct 19, 07, 08:38:14 PM »
I recently had some landscaping done, and 10 of my rose bushes were dug up and moved.  The landscaper told me that it would cause the foliage to die, but that they would come back next year.  Should I just leave the dead foliage until next spring when I prune them, or should I prune them now?  Perhaps prune and winterize?  I'm not a rose expert, but they have always grown beautifully despite me.  Some are a gift from a precious person in my life and I would be really sad if I neglected them and they died.  Advice?  Thanks.

Wait until you are sure that they are dormant mine still have roses then prune off the dead parts along with your normal pruning. I usually prune mine around the end of January. Make sure to prune just above the future branches that the pointing to the outside. And clean out the areas in the middle. If they did a good job moving them everything should be ok.

All of the foliage is completely wilted or dead.  Should I still wait until January?  Hopefully they did a good job moving them--we paid them enough.  Thanks for the help!~

Roses are very resilient.  Usually when they are first planted or moved they become "shocky", try not to worry too much as they should come back.

I would personally would trim the leaves off that are dead but I would not prune the branches yet.  I am no expert, but thats my opinion.

The problem with the doing the dead portions now is there may still be some life even though it looks brown and the plant after moving does not need any additional shock so why take the chance when the dormant season is so close.

I agree with Redneckgirl. Just strip the dead stuff off and wait to prune it when winter is closer.

I recently re-potted a rose and it looked pretty dead so I hard pruned the whole thing and low and behold, the canes started sprouting new growth.  Not what you want to be doing right before winter, but I wanted to see if the plant was truly dead.  It wasn't.
