Weekly Trivia Questions
« on: Jul 30, 07, 07:00:22 PM »
During the Sunday evening Disaster Preparedness net we will be asking a trivia question(s) each week.

This week we started with the following 3 questions.

Q1) True/False
Is it a requirement to have a copy of your Amateur Radio License in your possession, while using an HT?

(HT, derived from Motorola's "Handie Talkie" trademark also known as a walkie-talkie)

Only 3 people answered this one correctly
A1) False. This answer is due to stir some additional comments.

FCC Title 47--Telecommunication Chapter I, PART 97--AMATEUR RADIO SERVICE was thoroughly searched and contains no mention of it.
http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_00/47cfr97_00.html

Jim, W7FTT contacted ARRL (American Radio Relay League) and was told that possession of your license while operating from any location with any radio is no longer required. Further documentation is being searched and will be presented when found.

Q2) True/False
You do not need to sign your Amateur Radio License for it to be valid.

A2) False. On current copies of Amateur Radio License sent by the FCC it states that "They are not valid until signed".

Q3) True/False
Can you laminate your Amateur Radio License?

A3) True. On current copies of Amateur Radio License sent by the FCC it states "The commission suggests that the wallet size version be laminated (or another similar document protection process) after signing. The Commission has found, under certain circumstances, laser print is subject to displacement."

Okay, I am going to have to split some hairs here and file a protest. A question can not be true or false, you need to make a statement and then ask if it is true or false. The first "statement" that you asked if it was true or false should have started with "It is" and ended with a period and not a question mark. Number 2 was fine, but number three should have stated "You can laminate your Amateur Radio License" true or false. As a senior delinquent, I don't need to be more confused than I already am. :D

The other two were no brainers.

I don't care if it is the law or not, I'm still carrying my ham license in my wallet.  The FCC went through all the trouble of providing a nice sized copy of it just for that reason.

Also, it will come in handy if I must prove to law enforcement officers that I am a HAM, should I ever be asked to help out in some way during an emergency.

Another point, while it is never enforced, and there are questions or debates as to whether the 50 year old laws really apply anymore, having a scanner mounted in your vehicle can be illegal "technically" without a permit in most counties.  Back in the day, in many areas HAMs were allowed to do so.  Having the license can prove that you are a responsible person in communications should authorities ever question it.

Sorry your protest is rejected as the protest period ended when Net Control asked for Additional comments or questions before closing the Net.

7 people had number #2 wrong
nobody missed #3

Jim, W7FTT sent some additional information about #1:

Quoting from the FCC's Web site, "Your operating authority begins when your license grant information appears on the amateur service licensee database of the Universal Licensing System."  This almost seems to contradict the stated message on the side of the license document itself; "...and sign immediately upon receipt.  They are not valid until signed."
Dated: The present.

With that said, I still hope we can encourage ALL KW6WW net participants to carry a copy of their license at all times.  I'll give you my opinion:  In a disaster, authorities could ask for some sort of proof of licensing before allowing you to pass a check-point. It will ultimately be up to everyone individually, but as in the case of the Queen Mary radio room operation, you MUST have a copy of your license before you can operate that station.  That is the rule of the 'Associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach', and they can make that a requirement....and have done so.

The statement I found in FCC Rules books dated back in 1987.  Words to that end do not appear afterwards.  Also, the statement I sent to you yesterday (Sunday evening), could be interpreted a second way;

"The operator license must be kept in the personal possession of the licensee when operating an amateur station."  That really doesn't say 'on your person', but just implies you must have control of the possession of it (such as in one's house or safe, etc.).

I picked T T T just to be different.  Of course after Clint answered, I knew he had the right answers and chose to be contrary.  Not only did I not sign my license - I don't know where it is.  I guess I'd better start hunting for it.

KF6EVA

My daughter Tracy joined the net on Sunday - KF6RPX.  I'm sure she's one of the youngest on the net - and we also don't know where her license is.  She got it when she was 12.  Speaking of which, she also did not change her address - also a violation.  Can this be done online without incurring a cost?

that's it.. she's buying the doughnuts at the next meeting, as penance for her sins ;)

You should be able to change your address, and replace your license, here: http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=service_home&id=amateur

Bob is right you need to get your address corrected for both of you and yes you can do it online. It might take an email or two because you'll need to get your FRN (FCC Registration Number) password before you can make changes.

You can also print a reference copy from the FCC website:
http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/searchLicense.jsp

Or you can get fancy at this webpage: http://www.ae7q.net/Generate.html

Thanks for all the links!  I checked and found that my son's license expired last month, so I'm encouraging him to renew it ASAP (looks like he has two years, but I won't tell him that).
