Wrightwood's old Zoo and Ice Skating Rink
« on: Nov 22, 02, 11:32:25 AM »
Wrightwood had a Zoo and Ice Skating Rink years ago that most people don't know about.

If someone out there has more information about these old facilities it would be great to hear about them. (especially if any old photos are available - I'd love to post them)

You might want to try Rick the Handy Man. I remember him telling me some about the old zoo a while back when I had him install my dish.

Sounds like Rick the Handy Man should be a Forum Member as his name has come up a few times.

I found out about the Zoo from the person who owns the property where it was located. I was hoping someone might post history about the zoo for everyone to enjoy.

My Neighbor just brought me a book that has one picture in it of buffalo at the Big Pines Zoo on Table Mountain. The name of the book is:

The Mountaineers by Pearl Comfort Fisher
copy right 1972

I'm pretty sure Rick the handy man lives on the property where the old zoo is.  Nice guy, doesn`t seem to mind if you stop and look at the cages etc..,

We have several pictures and written material on the old zoo and skating rink at Big Pines at the Old Firehouse Museum at 6000 Cedar Street in the heart of the Village.  The Museum is open on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Everyone is welcome and you are encouraged to come to the Museum.  There are lots of artifacts and early history of Wrightwood!  Rick lives in the building that was the original Ski Club at Big Pines.  The zoo was located just behind his house.  Our Historical Society sponsored a tour including this site for our annual membership drive two years ago.  Check the Mountaineer for events at the Historical Society.

Rick reports that a lot of people have been cruising around looking for the zoo. He would like to show it, but would like a phone call  first to make arrangements. Yellow pages, Lions Club directory, under Home Maintenance.
