Anyone intrigued by this might also enjoy reading William Langewiesche's (non-fiction) book: The Outlaw Sea. In one section of it, he describes the 1994 sinking of the ferry ship Estonia, in the stormy waters of the Baltic Sea. Events happened so fast that only the very strong and very lucky (right place/right time) had any chance of survival.
