What about the powerhouse closures?

Looks like that closure is in effect until the end of the year.

Since our annual Adventure Pass has expired, it's time to get a new one. Or is it? What is the current state of affairs relative to Adventure Passes? Are they being required? Are they even being sold? I've seen a lot of mixed messages over the past few months.

The Adventure Pass policies have changed to a small degree. In the past there was a boundary known as the recreational fee use required boundary. Signs are still in place where those boundaries exist. However, new enforcement has since changed, not having anything to do with the National Monument status. The Adventure Pass is required in all no host campsites, day use picnic locations, parking lots with either pit toilets, picnic benches, fire pits, elevated fire pits, and trash cans. They are no longer required by simply being in the boundary perimeter. If your not sure, it's best to hang it or place it on the dash. They have not been or will be required in host campsites such as Table Mtn. Mountain Oak and Jackson Campgrounds just to name the few in our area (area 38). Daily Adventure passes are still for sale in the usual locations in town and year passes may be purchased on line or at Grassy Hollow Visitor Center. Big Pines information center will be open when the position is filled. Senior passes can not be purchased on line as proof of age is required. Basically were ever there is USFS improvements such as mentioned above they are still required and will be enforced.  No word yet (that's been passed to me) on the future of the Adventure Pass or any such fees since the National Monument signing.

Hope this answers your question.

I thought you were only required to pay for an adventure pass if you were using said facilities, just not being near them.

Pretty sure I read the Supreme Court ruling in a link from this forum

That is why my USFS partner and I haven't been enforcing Adventure Pass compliance at Vincent Gap or Inspiration point.  Even though those are popular trail heads and most people use the facilities before hitting the trail or when coming off the trail, we have better things to do than sit there watching to see who uses them and who doesn't.  We've joked about it being pretty petty to be sitting there, watch someone get out of the car and then... wait, wait, see... they looked at the information board, threw some trash in the trash can, sat on the bench or used the restroom, so let's write them up.  We rarely wrote citations (NRFs) at Vincent Gap anyway as most people, 99% of them, have the Adventure Pass displayed and still do. The intent of the decision was that people shouldn't have to pay a fee to just park and go hiking.

We are however enforcing Adventure Pass compliance at the non-concession campgrounds (Blue Ridge, Guffy, Appletree, Peavine, Big Rock, Sycamore Flats and South Fork) and picnic or day use areas (Arch, Mescal, Grassy Hollow, Jackson Lake and West Gate), as you are using the facilities by your very presence there.

Adventure Passes online:

https://secure.kinsail.com/partners/parks.asp?p=socal&pt=store/

They do charge shipping, so it's easier if you live in Wrightwood to get your passes at Jensen's, the gas station, Grassy Hollow on the weekends, etc.  As mentioned it is anticipated that the Big Pines Information Center will be open again in the near future so you'll be able to buy them there when it opens.

Don't forget if you are 62 and over, you can get a Senior America the Beautiful Pass http://store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.html#benefits   That is a lifetime pass that provides you not only with an Adventure Pass but with great discounts to national parks, etc.
