Good! With the amount of training they get and on-the-job experience, they absolutely should be allowed into fire academies and on track to a career. They've earned it!  (Only low risk, minor offenders are given the opportunity to be trained on fire crews.)

Yes, this is great.  And having something good to do after reentering the world is so important too!

CalFire has hired former inmates as firefighters for many years.

Sadly....now that Gov Newsom has declared that Inmate Crews were "slave labor" and the state has released all but the most heinous offenders, plus the new "No Money Bail" program,  there is not a large enough pool of non-violent offenders to continue the program.  The state is going to paid crews.  You can't make this stuff up. The convict crews did meaningful work, learned some things and made a little money to boot.  Their standards while in the program were high.  We always treated with respect on the fire line and in camp.

It's not slave labor if they volunteer/request for the opportunity

Many people have invested their time for opportunity.

I thought this legislation passed and Newsom signed it. Yes/no?
