Blaze Scorches 270 Acres, Forces Evacuations

POSTED: 5:44 am PDT April 27, 2008

SIERRA MADRE, Calif. -- A wildfire that has scorched 270 acres and forced the evacuation of about 100 homes in neighborhoods near Pasadena might not be under control for days, officials said early Sunday.

Firefighters originally had hoped to have the blaze contained Sunday, but gusting winds late Saturday night kept the fire burning out of control and creeping toward nearby homes, said Elisa Weaver of the Arcadia Fire Department. The mandatory evacuation order came shortly before 11 p.m.

The fire broke out on a hot, dry Saturday afternoon in Southern California about 10 miles northeast of Pasadena, Weaver said.

More than 100 hikers were escorted out of the forest by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, and Boy Scouts were evacuated from a camp, Weaver said. No injuries were reported.

Containment was not expected for two to three days, Weaver said.

"I think the biggest concern is this area ... has not burned in 10-plus years, so there's a lot of fuel up there for this fire," Weaver said.

More than 200 firefighters were aided by a dozen engines, three water tankers and three helicopters as they took on the blaze, Weaver said. She said more air support was expected later Sunday morning.

"They plan on hitting this thing at full force as soon as dawn hits," Weaver said.

Meanwhile, two shelters have been set up in the area for evacuees.

Flames outlined steep ridges about a mile above Sierra Madre, a community of about 11,000 at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains that is popular with artists.

This story should serve as a warning to our town that fire season is already upon us and we all need to take steps to be prepared. There is a good chance that we will have above normal temperatures this summer and with the amount of moisture we have had this year, it could make this a very dangerous fire season.

I hope everyone in town will take advantage of this year's free Pine Needle and Green Waste Dropoff, May 3 - May 10, to get those important clearances around your homes.

The Wildfire and Disaster Awareness Day on May 10 will have tons of information on how you can help keep your family safe and reduce the risk of your home burning in a wildfire. There will be fire resistant landscaping ideas, fire extinguisher training, fire extinguisher servicing, child fingerprinting, pet micro chipping, CERT training information, disaster preparedness training information and  information on what you should have on hand to help your family get through a disaster. Please take advantage of this great opportunity to be informed and prepared by attending this important community event.

The "Boy Scouts evacuated from a camp" were evacuated from a small public park in a residential area as a precautionary measure.

The Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team are now on their way to Sturtevant Camp, a remote 1920's
era collection of cabins and a lodge, to potentially escort out a wedding party of 50 people. The fire has backed down hill across the Chantry Flats Road at Lannon Canyon and the campers may now be safer sheltering in place.

For those of us who are new in town, where are the Pine Needle and Green Waste Dropoff and Wildfire and Disaster Awareness Day going to be? Is there a date that the fire dept will start issuing notices or citations or is the effort just ongoing good practice?

Here is a link to a story about a former long time Wrightwood resident whose special day was made more unique by being evacuated by helicopter from Camp Sturvdevant.  Ironically, they had planned their event in the Spring to avoid the chance of wild fire.

This should be a great reminder for everyone living in the wildland urban interface (Wrightwood, Phelan, Pinon Hills, etc) that you've got to get the defensible space around your homes completed.

Here is the Inciweb link for the Santa Anita Fire.  http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1233/

They have downgraded the containment to 23% from 30% because they were able to fly the perimeter and do better mapping.

Looks like the observatory could do a little defensible space work!

The manager of Sturtevant Camp is current Wrightwood resident Chris Casten (may have spelling wrong).

her...Julie Sokolowski...the Bride...

The manager of Sturtevant Camp is current Wrightwood resident Chris Casten (may have spelling wrong).

Chris would be Julie's stepdad, they are very very familiar with the area in fact the camp is where they got married....

anyone know if Joey and Amy Sokolowski were there? From what I hear Chris and Joan are still there....at the camp....wonder if they are ok are have since hiked out?

Everyone is fine after the entire wedding party was flown out in five trips by LA County Air Rescue 5.
