I am in the Pinon Mesa area and I distinctly smell smoke. Is there any burning going on today?

I looked for "Official" posts here myself about 1/2 an hour ago, but didn't see anything yet.

All I know is that we heard the sirens and saw the trucks go by around 4:00 this morning.

When I went out to look around 5:30, there was a plume of smoke rising up near the homes at the top of East Canyon that you could see from our front lot as you look up Sheep Creek Wash. All the smoke is blowing right toward Pinon Mesa. From the smell and location, it must be a house fire. Hope everyone's ok.

Not really the top of East Canyon. Slippery Elm. It's the Slippery Elm Incident. Must have started around 04:30, smell of smoke woke me around 4:35-4:40 was already generating good flame height. By the glow in our windows to the east my first thought was that Lone Pine canyon was on fire.

Units were first dispatched at 4:12am to 2042 Slippery Elm

Here's a MP3 file (1.3 meg) with radio traffic audio from 4am through 5am that includes the Slippery Elm structure fire.

That must have been what my dogs were barking at - I told them to shut up and went back to sleep.

So I take it there were no injuries?

I just walked down and looked at the house.  It's hard to believe that no one was hurt worse than that.  There are three cars parked at the residence and a motorcycle in the garage and one thrown down in the yard.  It's amazing that everyone got out, as the house had to be fully engulfed by the looks of it now.  Luckily there are no trees overhanging the house that could have caught on fire.

Two cats and a dog died in the fire.  Very sad.  It looks like they lost everything inside their house.

I was amazed at all the ambulance chasers (or I should say fire truck chasers) all lined up on the street.

I can't believe I slept through it.  I've had a cold and can't smell anything.  Since the dogs never bark at night/early morning, I should have paid attention.

Is there anything the community can do to help the family?

I'm so happy the family got out, but so sad for their pets.

And Clint, that must have been eye opener when you looked out the window!

Yeah, over here at the east end of town a fire coming Lone Pine Canyon is always considered.
Although historically they have not burned up that way and the work of SBNF has helped to mitigate the threat tremendously. Thank you Gabe!
