Trail Etiquette Breached!
« on: Nov 01, 08, 05:23:01 PM »
1.  Horror!!  Appalling human behavior this morning!!  Person (or companion of this person) wearing bright yellow rain/safety gear did business ON the trail followed by laughter.   This is inexcusable.  At least be as courteous as a dog and cover up.  I am very upset by this despicable behavior!  Guess what?  You are not alone out there!

2.  People "walking" dogs off leash, particularly on well traveled trails.  I usually have my own with me and have been charged more than once by dogs off leash, some not so friendly.  I understand people want to let their pooches run around but those busy little trails are not the place to do it.

P.S.  Re: dogs off leash, I am guilty of the same and learned the hard way that just when you think you're alone and have everything under control... you're not and you don't :(
Didn't mean to sound preachy - I was frustrated by my outing today.

Also, I know that not everybody who loves nature walks necessarily likes dogs.  And often there are little kids on the trails too.  Oh, and horseback riders!

Today I was passed by a group of hikers.  They had one rather feisty dog with them who wanted to do more than sniff noses.  The handler was nervous about passing and I held my 3 back but his dog was naughty and pulling and caused him to trip and fall.  I felt so sorry for him!

Yeah, I'm with you on that one.  What were they thinking???  Disgusting.

I guess I'll be charitable and put it down to not knowing what to do in the woods, but YUCK.

Hi Jim!  Unfortunately I have to live with the visual for a while.  >:(  OMG!  Yuck is right!   You'd think he would have at least hidden behind the trees, right?  I hope I never encounter that again EVER.

You are kind to be charitable!

As for the folks who like to let their dogs go off leash, it is against the law, there is a leash law in San Bernardino county as in other counties.  Those of us who abide by those laws have trouble walking our dogs for fear of being charged by those off leash.  I never walk my 15 yr. old dog without his leash, he is obediance trained but when we have been charged by other dogs while walking, we are at an extreme disavantage and are in danger.   And it doesn't matter the size of the "attacking" dog, little or big, someone is going to get hurt.

Yes I understand people wanting their dogs to walk "free" but you never know how your dog will react.  I am disgusted with those who don't properly restrain their dogs, off leash or with those retractable leashes and then I have to suffer was well as my dog.  A dog should be walked on a 6ft. leather lead for proper control of the animal.   A leashed dog is at a disadvantage in a dog fight if it were to start.

People, if you are dog owners, be kind to them and to all of us who obey the dog laws, and walk your dog on a leash. please.  :)

It was clarified by a forest servive volunteer some time ago that it is only illegal to walk dogs off leash while on the trail. If they are running up and down the mountain then they are in compliance with the law. My dogs love to run off leash and are rarely on the trail. Living in the mountains is one of the best lives for a dog. If you go to a secluded spot and let your pooches go it is great for both the owner and the dog! There is a way to do so and not put others in harms way.

This is true if you go to those places where you don't run into anyone else.  And yes, dogs love to run.  Mine did in his younger days, I clocked him once at 22 mpg on a straight away, but now that he is old, he just likes his peaceful walks.

If everyone would be courteous as you seem to be then we would all be safe walking our beloved friends no matter how old they are.   :)

Re: Dirt bikes or any other motorized vehicles...  Legal or not on local trails?  I believe there was some discussion on this not too long ago (or whether or not they present a fire hazard) but I would just like to know if they are prohibited.

New kids have been riding motorcycles on the trails near my house and there is NO WAY they could avoid hitting someone walking around those narrow bends at certain points.

22 mpg?

mine will run 15 to 22 mph for about 3 miles then he'll stop and drink about a gallon of water...  So I'd say he gets about 3 mpg at 15 mph.  ;)

I know the PCT is off limits to any mechanized form of transportation, including bicycles.  I've always assumed that official USFS trails are off limits to motorized vehicles, but I guess that assumption should be checked...

The Angeles National Forest has a "closed unless designated open" policy for motorized vehicles that was set up in the 1987 Forest Plan.  I think the San Bernardino has the same policy but I'm not sure.  There are officially designated motorized trails on the ANF.  Not nearly as many as non-motorized trails.

They are riding illegally. Especially if they are kids! There are some fire roads that street-legal motorcycles are allowed (as is any licensed vehicle), but if kids were riding the bikes, chances are they are non-plated and illegal.

(off subject)

I saw a couple weekends ago on the highway 2 wash where people walk their dogs, or just walk:
1. an older woman riding a quad with NO HELMET
2. a teen boy riding a motorcycle with NO HELMET

both riding very fast.
