Photo Flash Back

This 1950 photo of a still existing building within the business district of Wrightwood even had the old timers guessin'. Can you guess where this building is. Now, it's somewhere between Apple and Hwy 2 and Cedar and Pine...opps, what am I saying, that is the business district.

Take a gander at this 1930s photo of this marvelous lodge; can you name it, and how come it isn't around any more?

Some hints:

Photo one was one of two cabins that made up a small motel that used to be located at the present day children's playground near the school in the 1940s. The other one, which used to be called "The Ross," is now called the Blue Ridge Inn. This one currently sits on Evergreen. How's that for a hint?

Photo two shows the hot place in town in the middle sixties and until its fateful day in May 31st seventy-eight years ago. It was the companion of a cafe that also graced the area...before most of Wrightwood's roads were around, including Park.

Photo Two- shows the old Wrightwood Rec Hall in one glorious piece in 1931.

Photo from Wrightwood Historical Museum archive (possible Frasher photo)

This photo shows the "Commons", the literal center of old Wrightwood. Pictured from left to right: The Cafe, The Recreation Hall and the Wrightwood Lodge. On the Labor Day weekend of 1937, an accidental fire that orginated in the kitchen area burned down the Cafe and Rec Hall.

Today, in the place of the cafe and Rec Hall stands the Blue Ridge Inn.

Now, what about Photo 1? Perhaps another hint...it sits between an eating establishment and a hotel.

In the old days, the downtown area of Wrighwood was what you might call a town that was always on the move. Like many other older mountain communities, including Big Pines Park (actually once referred to as Swarthout by the post office), many structures  were built to be moved from place to place. One shack in Wrighwood was moved a record five times before becoming a sales office; it once sat in the area of Desert Community Bank.

The photo showing the snow covered building was moved, and no doubt carries its own memories; if was part of a early hotel complex that houses many visitors, including those service men heading out to World War 2 or assigned to nearby Victor Air Field (George AF Base). It might have house many who visited the ski hills in Wrightwood and near by Big Pines Recreation Park. It was called the "Martin," and along with the "Ross," (now called the Blue Ridge Inn) it was moved to this location in 1944.

The location was many things: hair dressers, and an assortment of shops. Today, white sheets hang from its window...its existence no doubt not as glamours as the Blue Ridge. It houses people...something it did over seventy years ago. Some of the staff of the Mexican Lindo next door stay here.
