3N31 open year round?
« on: Dec 30, 10, 03:28:44 AM »
Does anyone know if 3N31 (off Lone Pine Cyn @ Clyde Ranch) is open year round or is there a gate?

I've seen it closed in the past (with signage), so from where I sit, I think they close it whenever it would endanger your life to drive on it.  Do the rest of you agree?  Toolman?

I think an easier way to deal with these concerns like closures, gates, no trespassing areas and such is to adopt the "I was impatient" mindset! This unique emotion can get you past any barrier in any wilderness area! I've seen it in action and it's amazing!  All one needs to do is think selfishly and there you are! A free pass to anywhere! I used to take my dog walking on that road before the fire, and I don't recall a gate. As Domingo said it has been closed with signage before but that was removed. I'm still not sure I'd want to take it because the fire was so intense in that area, but it may be O.K. after a year and a half.

BTW, I have no idea what the other previous poster is going on about.

Actually, the gates at 3N31 above Clydes Ranch and below on 3N29 were installed after the Sheep Fire. The roads use to be open but not maintained year round. I suspect they will remain closed through the winter and the area is still considered a burn area rehabilitation project.

Those 4WD drive roads were a popular area as well as Stockton Flat on the south side. I've covered those hills many times and I wouldn't do it without 4WD going up 3N31 as towards the top there is considerable loose rock area. Once at the top or going up 3N29, 4WD wouldn't be required.

I don't know when the gates will be re-opened, best to call the SBCUSFS office for details.

Fight On does a lot of hiking on the west side of the Angeles NF and witnesses a lot of hikers going into the closed burn areas. He's ranting because he follows the rules were as others don't.

Occasionally he'll bless us with his presence in the Wrightwood area. ;)

Thanks Domingo, Chris and Toolman. I am interested in accessing the PCT from there. I looked up the closure area map, and 3N31 is clearly in the closure area, but the most recent document I can find expired 10-3-10. However as of 10-25-10, the PCT is no longer included in the closed area.
I can just walk the road, its only 3.25 miles to the PCT, but its unclear if its still apart of the sheep fire closure area. I guess I will have to call the Ranger Station, hopefully they answer the phone......

I know Fight On, he is banned from most of the hiking forums I frequent, glad he still has a home here.  ;D

Yep, as soon as I discovered the admin/mods of those boards frequently trespass and enter closed areas I had no problem asking them personally why they did. Turns out comments and or questions other than praise are not allowed!  :)
