We participated in the "tree thinning" program several years back when they started it.   55 trees were removed from our 10,000 sq ft lot, still leaving 30 or so.

Forest Care Eligibility: The project must be 20 acres or less in size, located in or around the San Bernardino National Forest, and have over 100 trees per acre.

100 trees per acre is the minimum tree density requirement for a landowner to qualify for Forest Care. On a 1/10 acre lot, that would equal 10 trees.

Thanks for the info.

Hmmmm... if my calcs are correct, I'm at 5200 sf with 9 trees left after having had removed 3 recently, and several more some time back.  Shoot!  I believe I own the biggest dang tree in town and would love to have it taken down.  Only thing is, I think it would cost a small fortune to do so but would keep Merlin in Bear material for a long time!

Merlin, are you listening?

Wayne was helpful for a couple of branches I needed trimmed.

Here's who took care of things for me last year when I needed to trim and remove trees per the new county guidelines. Very professional, did good work, and knew how to do the right things to get reimbursed under the forest care program.

Does anyone know a contractor who works with a lift?  I had that done once years ago and it was great.   They were even able to reach over the garage and cut branches from my huge pine.  The last time I had some one promise that they could climb the trees without damage.  Well, those trees leaked sap for years !!! afterward from the spikes.

I just have a few long branches next to the driveway and road that I would love to have removed.

I've called for quotes and am waiting for a response.

FYI, Shawn Bay will be here on Saturday Aug 4 at 10am to give me a price. If anyone else needs a price, call him and he will come over after (or before?) he does mine.  909-253-8388

Wayne came over today and trimmed our trees despite the lightening and thunder. He did a fantastic, thorough job. We couldn't be happier. His pricing was great AND he is a genuinely nice man! We will call him for all of our future work!  :2thumbsup: Thanks to the forum for a great recommendation!

We are approved for the Forest Care program but have been running up against a challange related to the approved operator list. Most the contractors aren't willing to come to WW and do the job much less provide a quote. Except Wes noted above.

Does anyone have any recommendations for approved operators who are actually willing to take jobs here?

We used Wes from Timbertree a few weeks ago. He was just slightly higher than a local company, but he has a lift and carried ALL the required insurance, including workers comp - that was important to me.

Wes does have a travel charge if you are his only job in Wrightwood, but he will waive that if he can combine your work with others he is doing in the area. We have more work to be done this fall once the trees are more dormant, and we've already talked to another resident about coordinating our work days.

Timbertree was on time, their crew was professional, and they did everything they said they would, including cleaning it all up and hauling it away. Wes won't accept payment until you are happy with their work. I highly recommend them.

We have some dead trees in the backyard and the branches are falling into the neighbors' yard.  Anybody have any recommendations for reputable tree removal and trimming services?

Wayne that cleans chimneys also trims trees. I haven't used him for that yet. I did hire Fernando Gonzalez of Honest Helping Hands Handyman for a rush job last Sat. He also trims trees. I'll likely have him back and give him a try for that and the brush.  760 249 4691. He was a hard and thorough worker on the job we had for him. cheryl o7o

What approximate diameter is the tree, is it a pine tree and what are the cross streets?

The reason for asking:
Wrightwood is currently experiencing a very high tree mortality rate due to bark beetle infestation. The drought stressed trees are perfect hosts for the Ips pine engraver. Any trees taken down MUST be treated properly to help prevent further spread of the bark beetle.

At the upcoming Fire Safe Council meeting there will be a presentation and discussion on the 2014 Drought and Bark Beetle Tree Mortality in Wrightwood.

They are not pine trees.  They are very tall slender trees with a light grey colored bark and when they die the branches are very brittle.  When we had that last storm with the strong winds a few of the tree tops snapped off and fell in the neighbors yard.  We need somebody who has the ability to remove tall trees and maybee section them up for firewood use.

Good point Wrightwood. On a similar note, what are the conical trees that we see here and there? I see a large proportion of those that are dead. If they were killed by bark beetle, wouldn't it be best for property owners to get rid of them??? An example is on the top end of LPC where there are a few along the road.

The conical trees you're asking about are sequoias and dying from drought.

SCE completed their most current dead/dying tree survey yesterday and marked another 100 trees to be removed by their contractors.
The trees at the top of Lone Pine Canyon (in the path of SCE lines) have been marked for removal.

Wrightwood, Do you have a contact number for Edison regarding cutting down pine trees near the electric lines? I have 1 possibly 2 that may need to be cut down or at least looked at by Edison. Do I just call the number on my bill for Edison?  Thanks for your help!

Many of the cedars in town (looking a lot like a sequoia) are dead or dying- I'm thinking of those in front of the power substation on hwy 2.
What about the pine trees on either side along Hwy 2 as you come into town?  There seem to be a lot of dead trees and they don't seem to be marked.  If they are not a threat to power lines, does removal fall on Caltrans?
