If I remember correctly, the problem with littering fines is you have to see the person do it.  Unless we have a presence here on those days, the law really does not help.

This needs to be shown on the KABC, KNBC, KCBS, KTTV, etc!  Very few people read the news, most will watch it and if some pictures were sent in to document this it "may" make a teeny tiny impact.  Just a thought... ???

If anyone has noticed these people trash and graffiti there own neighborhoods.   Feel fortunate they don't come up more often.

I have a post on the Wrightwood Facebook page that addresses this issue. All News media's boast's about "post your pictures" OK, so I posted pictures of graffiti, trash and traffic from a weekend just as bad as this was from 2007 on L.A.Times and I whitless news. Only to be deleted in a matter of minutes. Maybe you'll have better luck with your documented pictures than I did.

we have a cabin on table mountain and I can tell you it gets nuts up there. People will setup folding chairs on peoples decks and snowboard off parts of the cabins. I have gone out multiple times and told people they do not belong there and the answer is always "Oh, I did not know that, OK. " Never mind all the no snow play and no parking signs. I am guessing they type of person that thinks its ok to go over a fence and play on someones deck is too stupid to read also?

I know its fun to play in the snow, and I don't want to sound like a scrooge, but heck, please be respectful.

The trash up here is off the charts. Totally trashed. Pigs... They just throw bins and bags of trash out on the ground. Its neat that they like their neighborhoods to look like a trash dump, but don't come up here and do the same.

End of rant...  8)

Why don't we get some just get a group of citizens and put on some forest green jackets, to look official. Go down to Hwy 2, and direct the traffic. Tell them they can't go threw, the mountain is full. We can all take shifts. If the sheriffs won't take charge and do something about this outrageous and illegal use of our community, then they probably won't give a crap if we get out there and take control. Or we could just put the coats on, look all official, and charge each car that turns onto Hwy 2 $20.00 or more for day use, and tell them they can not play or park in front of homes, or in town. If we all take turns, we will all go to the bank!! Are we just going to let these disrespectful low lifes come in and over run our town? I say we have a community meeting...It's just going to get worse in the coming years, and most of us know why.

I'm new to Wrightwood, lived here for one year now, so I'm not aware of what the town does or has tried to do in the past to solve this problem. What I'm wondering is, why can't the town charge money for a day pass of snow play, like the wilderness pass?. And list the rules, have limitations as to how many people the town can accommodate. If they charged money for a day pass, they could used the money for restroom facilities, security, etc. Is there a reason why the town can't charge money, like a wilderness pass?

Hi Jewel,

After you've lived here a few years you'll learn to take snow day problems with a grain of salt. First of all, we haven't gotten that much snow over the last few years (thanks, drought) and second, our decent snow happened over a holiday season. So it doesn't happen like this often anyway. As to charging... first off, we're not a town. We're not incorporated and can't as a body decide to stop people and charge them. They're coming up on a State Hwy and as long as they're not parking on private property they're not trespassing. Honestly they have every right to be here, as much right as we do in public places.

Wrightwood doesn't own the national forest. We can't charge people for playing in it.

Agree, that except for a few little things, there probably will never be a way to eliminate the gridlock. I think Jim Wilkins said it best, when he said "You can only put so much litter in the cat box before it overflows", or something to that effect.

You have way too many people, coming up on a freeway, then being congested on to one lane roads (SR-2). They all want to get to the top of the mountain, but there's only a few miles beyond Mountain High, where they can even think of going. Eventually, they'll run out of snow (Big pines Highway), or they'll run into closed roads, which means they need to turn around. The intersection at Big Pines is probably the worst, as you have roads coming together, plus the parking lots to the ski resorts. Folks often try to do u-turns there. Let's look at Mountain High parking lots. SR-2 is an ancient road. There are no turn pockets into the parking lots, and everyone entering those parking lots, must cross opposing traffic (also often gridlocked) to enter. Most of SR-2 does not have places for parking, with no shoulders. Of course, that doesn't matter to some people, as they'll park there anyway, which just causes even more congestion. Often, the two lane road is down to one lane, because of the illegal parking.

As others have said, you can't just prevent the public from using public roads. This not only includes state highway 2, but it also includes all the residential roads within the village (except of course, for the few truly private roads in the village). The parking situation in the village is the same. These are old roads, and narrow to begin with.

Roads can only be closed under strict conditions, related to safety. Yes, it would be nice if that "its not safe" card could be played a little sooner.

Restrooms and trash cans? Yes, more are needed. But where do we put them (legally)? Who pays for them? No one wants any more construction up here, widening roads, or making huge cement parking lots in the forest, so the areas where restroom facilities could even be placed, is limited.

Keep in mind that these problems usually only happen when we get a decent amount of snow, and there is a holiday or weekend involved. But as you know, a good size storm is only predicted like one week or so in advance, and then, you only really have a better idea of how much snow will be involved only a day or two before the storm. How many of these episodes do we see in a year? Well, for the past few dry years, not too many. This past weekend was probably the worst so far of this season. When's the next one? Who knows. It's really hard to plan/coordinate for things like this, with little advance notice. I mean it's not like the Rose Parade, or any other scheduled event, where everyone knows the dates will in advance.

Oh and by the way, I'm sure the construction on I-15 didn't help with gridlock either. And yes folks, another round of Highway 138 "widening" is scheduled to begin, and run for a whole year. That's a double-whammy for us.

THANK YOU Fenner Camp and to our local National Forest/National Monument employees for doing a remarkable job cleaning up trash after the recent influx of snow players!!
You have cleaned up an amazing amount of trash so far!
While driving on Highway 2 yesterday, I was impressed by how many trash bags you could get in the Forest Service stake bed truck parked at Vincent Gap.
And a Fenner crew was busy cleaning up near Mountain High East.
Great job!

Also a big Thank You to Mountain Hardware, they are sending out employees to help with the trash clean up as well.  They also give the snow players who come into the store a free trash bag  :2thumbsup:

Ron Frame, field representative to Supervisor Lovingood confirmed with me this morning that they will indeed be attending the MAC meeting on 1/12/2015. The supervisor's office says: "Supervisor Lovingood has suggested the community provides their concerns and suggestions on possible solutions concerning these weekend events at the MAC meeting for his review."

Snow Play and Winter Gridlock Nothing New

Snow Play Craziness and Gridlock Nothing new in Wrightwood & Big Pines

1929-1930 Big Pines

I think it's safe to say that in the last 3 decades there's never been seventeen people at one time involved with traffic control.

1931 - 30,000 people in Big Pines

2003 Gridlock and snow play craziness

2005 Gridlock and snow play craziness

This year is by far the worst year for total gridlock and backups all the way to the I15.
There have been years where the traffic has backed up on Hwy2 into Wrightwood and once in a while to Hwy138 but not all the way to I15.

It's a combination of factors: The large increase in snow boarder attendance at Mountain High, recent fires have some forest areas closed, floods damage has much of SB Mountain areas closed, television remote news feeds and live cams have a huge influence, increased population in Southern California with SUV's being used for family outings is being overlooked by many, Sept 11 has caused people to stick closer to home for recreation and there's probably another half dozen factors I've missed.

Notes on Jan 2, 2011 Winter Snow Issues in the Wrightwood-Big Pines area

It should be recognized that there's always going to be times when a number of unforeseen circumstances all line up and surpass available resources and expectations.

Here's a list of things that come to mind:

-New Years 2011 fell on a weekend
-Fresh snowfall at very low elevations
-I15 shut down
-Caltrans and County road crews were still doing major road repairs from 7 straight days of record rainfall from the week before
(San Bernardino County experienced more significant property damage from winter storms occurring since December 18 than any other county in the state, with damage currently estimated at $59,501,466)
-CHP Antelope Valley had significant accident issues on Hwy 138 due to ice/snow and limited resources for Big Pines/MH area
-CHP Inland Empire & CHP Victorville resources were tapped due to I15/215/Hwy 395 closures & escorts
-Setting chain control at the county line and turning vehicles around backed up traffic for miles.
-Lack of coordination between CHP Antelope Valley & Victorville
-Hwy 330 shut down for the winter season
-Lone Pine Canyon Rd at Sheep Creek wash closed due to storm debris flow
-Lone Pine Canyon Rd through Lone Pine Canyon closed from storm debris
-4 hour delay from MH parking lot to Hwy 138 caused by poor road conditions and I15 closure

Compiling all those photos I read a number of related comments - I'd say there's more than 1 documented "perfect storms".

There's more I'll add as I locate them.

We would like to encourage others to post current Snow Play Craziness and Gridlock photos. We don't have much for the past few weeks.
