omg Surfer_Dude... I went to the movies the other day... we took our daughter & our grandson... I too was shocked also at the disaster the general public turns a theatre into!!!  & this is a brand new theatre on it's way to being totally trashed   My grandson had one of them lil kid popcorn, soda & candy meal thingys .... when he was done he threw his trash on the floor!  I bout had a cow lol & told him we use trash cans.. it is better to just take our stuff to the trash can... the people that work here are not our servants!  This is obviously "learned" behavior & I plan on making sure I have a lil discussion with his parents

Still  but don't you think the movie thing perpetuates because the kids that work the theater start cleaning as people are leaving? I mean, it's gotten to the point that it's like the busboy at the restauraunts. I agree, Breezy, they're not our servants, we 'pack out' as well - good for you talking to your grandson!!!

 A group of Forest volunteers will be out today. Most of the rash has been piled up by the Fenner crew, but there was still more activity out there yesterday.

I saw a big OLD red suburban parked in the turn out on LPC last week.  As I drove by I saw someone toss a fast food bag out the window.  That kinda cr_p just sends my blood to the boiling point.....

I'm kinda confused about your comment that Mountain Hardware should give better information.  The link you provided for Mountain Hardware mentions the National Forest 3 times.  It lists the five places where restrooms are available for people to use.  It tells people that all snow play is West of Wrightwood.  It asks folks to respect private property and tells them where to get an Adventure Pass.    I think they're doing more then their share to be responsible enough already.

Trash no matter where it is at is a disgrace to our community.  It doesn't matter who leaves the trash, the fact that people think it OK to leave it is troublesome!!

We have 8 acres and have many unwanted "visitors" every year despite the posting of signs.  Most disgustingly, we have caught them using our property as an outdoor bathroom.  It is obscene!  They get mad at us when we ask them to leave our property and tell us that we are rude and selfish!  Can you imagine?  We are always scared to death that someone is going to sled into a tree and then we will be facing a lawsuit.  Also, the trash problem is always great--they have regular bbq's on our property and then just pack up and leave the mess.  Ugh....it's the only part I hate about winter up here in Wrightwood.

You have the right to kick them off your property. I would say call the sheriffs but they would be gone by time they get up there.  You have to protect your self and your property. I'd get tough with them. Some times you just have too. Only other option is fence your property but that would cost a lot.

Eight acres is a lot to fence and with some of these bold visitors it wouldn't make a difference.    I feel sorry for you MountainMom.   I was always afraid visitors will find their way up to where I am and invade our adjoining vacant lot.   Luckily it is level and not conducive to sledding and it is out of the way.   However, they have visited teacherquinn and she doesn't live far from me so it's a matter of time before we are invaded.

Looks to me that 80% of the problem to be cheap plastic, sold by our local merchants. (A laundry basket holds up better). I don't see aluminum cans or bottles scattered about. How about a CRV attached to the sales of these sleds.
The local merchants charge a nominal fee, as do tire dealers, for the disposal of the product they sell. It's simple, you simply brand your product for identification, charge 3-5 bucks for sled redemption value, and offer a refund for returned products, broken or not.  Most people do not want to take a cheap broken piece of plastic back to L.A.

There ya go NOONE-5150.    Someone from the flatlands wouldn't considering bring their broken sled home with them.   They would have no use for it.    My husband has found a use for our sled during the summer.   He lines it with a garbage can and use it to put his tools on when he works on the cars.

Additionally, if there was a reward, there is incentive to return them.   Even if they don't, some other family who is willing to bring it in and get the money, then more power to them. 

Unfortunately, maybe they bring up their old used stuff and don't care where they leave it.


I have to agree that this is a learned behavior.   If people see trash laying around and their own parents and friends just drop the trash then why should they pack out their trash.

it seems as though the abandoned trash situation would be (at least partially) countered by:

- having a town law enforcement officer
- placing dumpsters at problem spots
- physically restricting access to problem areas
- having some of us (paid positions) patrol the problem areas, recording license plates, taking photos, being a physical presence to intimidate wrong-doers (wear a kevlar vest!)


unfortunately all of these options require a lot of money...
