homemade hummus

i love hummus, and it's made from healthy ingredients too! judging by the price it sells for i always thought it was some kind of exotic and expensive thing to make. actually it's super easy to make and there's nothing exotic in it. Here are the ingredients i use.

1 can garbanzos
2 cloves garlic
juice from one lemon
garlic powder
ground cumin
mrs. dash (your choice of mix)
1 heaping tablespoon Tahini
1 heaping tablespoon natural peanut butter
olive oil

you don't need and fancy food processor, just a simple blender. if you don't have a blender use a potato smasher and do it manually.

put all the ingredients in the blender. i use both fresh garlic and Trader Joes garlic powder, because the 2 garlics have different flavors. add the garlic powder and cumin to your taste, and don't add any Mrs Dash yet. make sure to get all the lemon seeds out of the juice or they will add a bitter taste.
start blending. you may need to add a small amount of water to get it to blend, just as much as it needs though. after you get it blended smooth, taste and adjust for taste. after it's blended scoop it into a bowl and drizzle some olive oil on top and sprinkle some Mrs dash for looks. i also add a couple of a table spoons of o oil while blending. i also sometimes add some Braggs Liquid Aminos for a little salty taste, since i don't cook with salt.

that's about it for a basic start. now experiment to get the custom taste you like. there really are no rules and you can use other types of beans besides garbanzos.  the most expensive ingredient is the tahini. but even then a can of tahini will make about a gallon or more of hummus. you can use any kind of nut butter as a substitute, i use natural peanut butter because it's cheep. once you make your own and see how easy and cheep it is, you'll also wonder why it's so expensive in stores.

Just had some home made Humus this evening (no peanut butter - just tahini) and it was delicious!  The recipe was almost the same as you have posted!

I've thought about making humus, but doing the math in my head at the store, the ingredients added up to about as much as a package of humus, so didn't seem worth it. Different story if you wait for a sale or Costco, of course.

the Tahini is expensive, but it lasts a long time. i get canned garbanzos at Food for Less for 39 cents a can. lemons are kind of high, but stuff like the spices last a long time since you don't used much. i guess if you had to buy all the ingredients at one time it would be a expensive, but you'll get a lot of hummus, and still have the spices for other things. buy spices at Trader Joes, they are cheaper than at the supermarket, and better. also, aside from the cost you'll know what's in there, and that to me is worth a lot.

no preservatives excess salt, and only your own hair. plus there's the feeling of a job well done!

My wife makes her hummus homemade and it comes out really good. She is going to add jalapeno and cilantro to her next batch. Guacahummus?  Staters carries El Guapo spices which are less expensive than the name brand stuff. The only draw back is that they do not come in a sealed container. I tried to make homemade tahini once and it was ok.  Easier just to buy it.
