It's official.  The USFS Packers will be in the Rose Parade.  This is something I have talked about, cajoled anyone who would listen for a lot of years and worked a lot of brain cells coming up with the right words for the application.  I was pretty stoked when we got accepted.  I'll be riding on the wagon.  I am also thrilled that we will have 20+ USFS Wildland Firefighters marching with us....some of whom were supported by the same pack strings on the fires up North this past season.

I will turn and look up at the cameras when we come onto Colorado Blvd and wave with my left hand (We were instructed not to use our right hand)  Ill be dressed as an 1897 Angeles Forest Preserve Ranger and I got a new, grey colored period hat based on some photos I found.  Nothing fancy, as those early rangers were pretty much just cowboys and working men.  Very similar to what I wore doing the programs at Grassy Hollow.

Jim... This is why I'm going to watch the Rose Parade this year. I am so jazzed. I don't get the left-handed salute vs the right-handed salute. .. but whatever. I will be watching and congratulations for all the hard work that brought this to fruition.. and THE ROSE PARADE!! best, cheryl o7o

Congratulations, Jim!  What an awesome achievement!  I always watch the Rose Parade anyway, but it will be extra fun this year to see someone I know.

Way to go Jim. I'm sure you'll look sharp in that period uniform. Thank you for the hard work and your tenacity on this. Looking forward to seeing it.

Haven't decided which look to go for.  The reality of the early Rangers was that they didn't have actual uniforms per se.  So, depending on the weather...Could look like this

or maybe like this.

Sadly, my beloved Fire is no longer with us...he made a lot of kids (and grownups smile).  I will be riding  "on the wagon" with the Chief's and Smokey.

Just completed two days at the LA Equestrian Center for the EquestFest celebration of the equestrian entries in the Rose Parade.  Here are two parts our our performance taken by a phone off the monitor in the RFD TV uplink truck of the Forest Service Mule string.  RFD TV broadcast it live around the world.  We'll be leaving for our staging area tomorrow night around ten...spend the night shivering and will be number 75 out of 85 entries....around 0930.  I'll be on the wagon

Congratulations, Jim, for having your vision and seeing it come to fruition. And congratulations to every being, human, horse, mule, et. al., who are being honored in this event. Fire was indeed stunning, Jim, and smiling in that photo. How proud he was to have you as his human. He may not be in the parade physically, but he will be there with you in spirit. Thanks again, Sagespirit

No beard this time. Pretty darn long mustache though. Grey smokey hat. I'll be riding on the back/off side of the wagon.
