I know there was a fire lookout there, above the summit,,,perhaps that is what they were referring to.

Thanks.  Looks like there are three generations of roads there - the 15, the 4 lane route 66 and an older 2 lane route 66.

There is a grouping of cell towers there.  Perhaps on the old property.

Found the former location of the home picture in the Google Books link, plus what looked to be other buildings.  Found it in Google Earth's historical imagery from 9/2003.  I vaguely recall the home, yet didn't recall that it burned down and was gone.  There is no trace of it in current photos.  It looks like it was razed.  I'll check it in person out at some point.
