Several years ago (maybe 3?) I emailed the FCC asking this very question. In my email, I mentioned that the FAA's online databases do not release address information for us pilots. I asked why different fed gov't agencies had their own rules involving what they would release to the public.
After quite some time, I did get a response back... and in the email, the person responding did admit I "stumped" him with my question. Anyway, the official answer I got from the FCC was that they release this "public" information because it's a "license", where the FAA issues "certificates", and not subject to the same kind of public release rules.
Bottom line: They gave me a lot of words that said nothing. I am still not satisfied. We should be able to "opt out". Sigh.
