We had 4 customers down due to line damage at the top of Cardinal. In order to effect repairs, we will need to splice one of the main feeds. This means a 30-minute outage for anyone around the Cardinal Area of Wrightwood.

Regards,

The Internet outage has been determined to be a bad network card in Long Beach. Techs were dispatched and we hope it will be resolved in two hours.

Whoa!  It isnt a blown out part but another back hoe incident? If so, that will weaken my trust in UIA.

And speaking about "parts", with all of the issues about China, it wouldnt surprise me that someday whether it be UIA or someone else, that some piece of equipment cant be fixed because of a trade issue with the Chinese.......for perhaps weeks or even for months on end.

Um, Leftfield... I think he was talking about some other incident from the San Francisco area that is NOT related to UIA.

Also, since this happened in Long Beach, isn't it possible that it was UIA's upstream provider's equipment and not UIA's equipment?

The post I quoted asked about redundancy.  I gave an example of how you can think you have redundancy, and the only way to find out that you don't is when something breaks.

My example was not from the UIA outage.  It was about a data center that spent money and took great care to insure that they had redundancy, and how they found that they didn't.

Another example was back east, when a truck fire in a tunnel showed how many telecom circuits ran through that one tunnel.

These are examples of how you can plan a very robust network, only to find that something happened beyond what you can control.
