Sounds great - I signed up for updates and am looking forward to learning more about this. Verizon has been ok for us but would like to add Netflix and I know that will mess up with our current setup.

With this speed is no problem to run multiple NetFlix movies for example.. It's enough speed to last well into the coming years without thinking about it.

What exciting news!!!

We would love to sign up with UIA too, but we just signed up with DSL Extreme for another year. Guess we'll just have to wait 'till that contract expires. :-/

I hate to call Verizon since we've been with them a long time.  I dont think I would get an honest answer from them anyway.   How can I tell when my bundle contract will come to an end with them?

Is there going to be a waiting list with fiber as there is with dsl?   More or less, when will this be available?
thx

It will take us a while to get it installed in the town. Signup at wrightwood.net to get emails as we get closer.
There are many steps to getting the network installed.. It is much like building a house, it looks like nothing is happening for quite a while then overnight seemingly the walls get framed and it starts looking like a house.

To Wes and UIA:

Thank you for undertaking this project.  I know that you are targeting the Wrightwood community, but has anyone thought about the group camps farther down Big Pines highway?  Do they get internet access?  Who is their provider?

I know that through the CERT program, we have talked from time to time about how to include the camps within our program. Since I haven't been able to attend various meetings for several months now, I'm not up-to-date on any current discussions concerning the camps.

I know you have to "draw the line" somewhere, and perhaps that is within the village limits for the moment.  But, it could be something to consider for the next phase of the project.  Good luck in going through the permitting, construction and roll-out process.  We are all keeping our fingers crossed that this project is successful!

Thanks RennMan,

We have to stick to within town limits right now. The way it works is that we have to pay a fee for every pole we are on to Edison (JPA - Joint Pole Authority). Not only that but each pole must be engineered before we can even go on them to make sure that the pole can take the wind loading weight and so forth. It really starts to add up if you count all the poles down to the camps. But nothing is out of the question as time goes on and I would say that Fiber has to get down there at some point.

This is terrific news. We are in the process of buying a home in Wrightwood and internet connectivity was a concern. We were resigned to slow DSL (if we could get it) or expensive and data-capped wireless. This makes us look forward to our new home even more.

Then someone in Pinon Hills needs to open a second restaurant.  I'm pretty sure there are no 1-restaurant towns with blazing fast internet.  Just sayin'...  :-)

Hi FireFly65,

Very tough to estimate right now.. there are many moving parts. Signup at Wrightwood.net get get email on blog posts there. First step is to get permits and all the poles around the path we will be taking engineered. As we move along I will be able to make much better predictions on a time frame.

Regards,

Wrightwood Fiber by UIA

Ultimate Internet Access is excited to announce that we will be bringing lightening-fast fiber-based Internet access to Wrightwood in the very near future. Currently, we are obtaining the necessary permits for building out the infrastructure, and then construction will begin on laying 1 gig fiber Internet access in our town. Construction will be developed in phases, so there is no current time line yet, but we will keep you posted here, and at www.wrightwood.net with updates on our progress. Fiber-based Internet brings Wrightwood into an elite group of communities across the country with 1 gig Internet access. It was a long time coming, and we still have a lot of work to do, but soon we will be on the cutting edge of speed here in town. We will keep you posted. Sign up on wrightwood.net for email alerts, and check here for more info.

This is GREAT news, I just signed up for updates!

I don't know anything about your project, but from the little I have read, it appears you will be using utility poles.
What does that mean for us living on the East side of town, where there are no utility poles?

Dan

Great news, Wes and UIA!  This will be awesome for everybody in town, and for Wrightwood as a whole.

A couple questions:

First: will static IP addresses be available and/or standard?  My wife needs one for some of the work she does from home (allowing her to log into secure machines remotely).

Second, I know you can't give a precise timeline and that there are a lot of variables, but for non-binding, ball-park numbers, would you expect the permit and approval process be a ~6 month thing, a 1-2 year thing, or a ~5 year thing?  Once the approvals are complete and the roll-out actually begins, do you have a rough estimate on how long it should take to reach most of the residences?

Thank you!
