We pay Frontier $46.99 a month for DSL.. 3M/768K.  They aren't delivering those speeds. So, a Frontier person is supposed to be here on Tues.  They first rotated the call to their Temecula office. That got changed for obvious reasons.  I'll let you know how it works out.

We pay $71.26/mo for DirecTV.. HD but no extra channels .. just basic. Three TVs.  Unless it snows.. DirecTV is on. If it snows.. we just go out and swirl the snow off of the dish.

Netfllix:  $9.99  (frankly I think they're better than most paid TV premium channels). A very large selection and you can pause for whatever you need to do.

Just for comparison....

The last really excellent internet connection I had was $304/month.  1.5 megabits up and down, and Guaranteed! 100% bandwidth and very low latency.  It really felt fast because clicking on a link got an almost instant response.  Ping times to my provider's closest router were on the order of 2 to 3 milliseconds.

If it failed at 10:00pm, repair came out that night.

What we get from Frontier is "provisioned casually" -- if you pay for 3m/768k, that's the speed between you and the central office.  They don't put enough behind it to guarantee decent speeds, and they don't promise that it'll work very often.  I suspect there is even a page in the agreement that allows for slower speeds if the wire won't stay at 3/768.

On Frontier, I definitely see 3 megabits at times, but I also see ping times near 4,000 msec.  That makes it feel (at times) 2000 times slower.

This is by far the worst "high speed" wire I've ever seen, and I know how to measure real-world performance.

So is there any word on the new time frame for installations?
I'm having a rough time with no Internet

Just like to bump this post to the next page, because I too would like to know the answer.

Thanks

Hi Scott, we are running a bit behind. But by the end of next week hopefully, if all goes well, we should be installing.

Frontier was here this morning to check our speeds.  We now have a new modem/router. He also said that we can expect slow speeds at certain times of the day. He lives here locally and has the same problem. He was a Verizon guy before Frontier took over. He didn't have anything nice to say about Verizon from the perspective of both an employee and a customer. He was a very nice guy. cheryl o7o

We've been experiencing slow or non-existent connections.  Called it into Frontier, and they eventually sent out a tech, who couldn't figure out what the issue was, attempted to install a new modem, which he couldn't get working.  Then he attempted to install a second modem, which he couldn't get working.

Then he ordered a new modem that I was supposed to install myself.

I called Frontier back, told them what happened, that I was not satisfied by their tech, and I was sending back the modem when it arrived.  Which I did do.

Next time I call, I'll request a local tech, since the guy that we got, didn't give any confidence that he knew what he was doing.

Hi all.  Just an little bit of an update.  We are about to complete the network for Section 1 this week.  That means we should be making installation appointments for Section 1 starting next week provided testing goes well.  I should have more information on Monday.  If you would like to sign up for high speed fiber based Internet, you can get information at www.wrightwood.net.  To see what section you are in go to the www.wrightwood.net page and go to See the Schedule.  We would love to have you as a customer and can't wait to serve you with 1 gig fiber service.

Thanks, Izuber, can't wait. Question:  I've read the contract info, and it says that you'll install a router at the closest point of the house to the telephone pole.  Can I pay you guys extra to run the fiber line all the way to my office on the other side of the house and put the router there while you're at it?

I've got the same question, but since I'm in section 5, the answer isn't that urgent.

The contract says the ONT needs to be plugged in somewhere, and since the ONT basically converts from glass to copper, it seems like they'll bring the fiber to the ONT.  Wouldn't be any different if you had ethernet from the ONT to your router.

That said, I'm guessing.  Looking forward to photos from the first installations.

I am not happy with a 2 year contract, I like month to month...  Not sure if I will do this.  We have to buy a router too?  and a possible wi-fi extender for $40-70 to reach all parts of your house?  My internet reaches all of my house currently, why will this be an issue?  Wifi capable of 100 mbps but we will get 40 to 60?  328 feet maximum ethernet cable?  what does that mean?

The short answer is: most phone companies and cable companies make a lot of promises which they often can't deliver.

UIA is being very careful to not make promises that can't absolutely be kept.

For example, they probably can do every bit as good if not better with their WiFi, but without seeing your house, knowing what's in the walls, etc. it's hard to know.

I don't work for UIA (not looking for a job), haven't met the principals, don't have a dog in this hunt.  You might want to call UIA and talk to them before you decide that these are show-stoppers for you.

I think a lot of people aren't aware that they don't pay ISPs for wifi, they pay for internet service.  The wifi is a value added item that is provided by the ISP for convenience.

It's kinda like if the water company came and handed you some pipe suitable for home plumbing when you got your service turned on.  The toilets and faucets are yours (computers and mobile devices, in this analogy) and the piping in your home is also yours, they are just giving you something simple to help get the water from their point of demarcation to your fixtures.  The extra piping is there to help, but if things are awkward in your house, or there is structural issues that interfere with the flow, then that is between you and your plumber, not you and the water company.

Personally, I wouldn't want the water company to be responsible for my home plumbing, they have to make sure the water gets to my house reliably, and should be focusing on that.

To put it another way: wifi provided by an ISP is similar to the starter ink you get with a new printer, it's nice to be able to use it out of the box, but you're expected to either make it work for you, or replace it when it doesn't.

On the topic of Contracts....

When I signed up for the worst internet connection I've ever seen, I'm fairly confident that the agent didn't mention contracts or contract terms.

When I moved, they charged me $150 for installation (and I may have paid for installation at the old place).

I know Verizon thinks we have a contract because the line item on my bill says "2yr" at the end.

I know I was never given a copy of the contract.

It's nice that UIA will do contract, or no-contract, and either way, no charge for installation.

I do not see a "no contract" option in the email I received.  It asked me to sign a 2 year commitment.  Please advise.  Thanks.

Probably best to drop UIA a note at fiber@uia.net, or give them a call.
Hi all.

There are two pricing plans.  You can do a 2 year commitment at $39.99 for the first year and $64.99 for the second year.  OR, you can do a month to month agreement for $70 per month.

If you would like a month to month agreement, I should have those available tomorrow.

Sorry about the confusion on that.

Are there any businesses (a la Village Grind, Cinnamons, Yodeler, etc) who have fiber yet and have wifi I can use while patronizing their establishments? Jan 1 seems like a long way off for my house to be hooked up.

Out of curiosity...does anyone in Zone 1 actually HAVE high-speed internet with UIA?  How is it?  I'm "Zone 5", so it's hypothetical until next year, LOL.

Seems they are a little ambitious in their timing for installation BUT I think it will get done.  When?  Not sure but hopefully soon.  I anticipated a 2 month delay which in the grand scheme of things isn't bad if what we get is what is promised and promoted.  Still looking forward to it!!  :2thumbsup:
