Good things are worth waiting for  ;D
Yes, but not always easy to wait for.

With all the new internet technologies, and streaming TV/Audio, VOIP, and everything else... I wonder how many years before we start saying "Man, internet in Wrightwood sucks... we only get 1 Gb service here"

It should really be a very long time from now.  UIA is offering internet over 300 times faster than what we have from Frontier, which was already pretty slow compared to what you could get elsewhere when I moved to town 8 years ago.

I would say a good 10 years. I might be wrong, maybe it is 6 or 7 years..  but computers themselves have to start coming with 10 Gig interfaces before you can even go any faster then the 1 Gig they have now. Nice thing about Fiber though is that it can already do 10 Gig or more. It is a matter of changing out the headend equipment.. some of this equipment is out there already in fact.

I suspect that it'll be about two standard eternities.

In technology, a "standard eternity" is about 3 years.

As Wes pointed out, fiber is awesome.  10 gigabits isn't a limit either.

That's incredible. Even on my Fios down the hill this is a 30 to 40 minute operation..

I had been paying for the "up to 7Mb" service from Frontier. Although I never got to the limit, my speeds weren't too bad. Nothing, compared to what fiber service can do.

Like many people, I live in a wifi house which means pretty much all of my gadgets are connected to the internet wirelessly and not directly connected. I recognize that wifi will always be the bottleneck. Although My TV/DirectTv DVR/Apple TV are hardwired to the Ethernet cable from UIA, the rest of my house (laptops, IPhones, etc) remain connected via Wifi.

Below, are speed tests I ran from my iPhone 5, connected to the internet via Wifi. My UIA service was connected on 10/14/2016, about 11am. The last three lines are the Frontier DSL speeds.

DateDownload (Mb)Upload (Mb)Latency (ms)
12/2/2016 10:4466.72452.74921
12/2/2016 10:4356.9456.84518
10/14/2016 13:4760.63257.2538
10/14/2016 11:3364.62355.2938
10/14/2016 11:2551.94268.3476
10/14/2016 06:076.4331.14139
10/9/2016 12:135.6251.22139
9/1/2015 15:226.7481.092107

I then took my laptop, and directly connected it to the ethernet cable. Here's the results:

DateDownload (Mb)Upload (Mb)Latency (ms)
12/2/2016 11:0790.1894.105

Wifi will probably produce the worst speeds you can get, but getting 56+ Mb via Wifi is unheard of, with our old DSL.

Bottom line: Even if you do everything via Wifi, you'll still get speeds way faster than you would with DSL.

Bob and I have been trading emails.. but looks like to me that it is not connected at full 1,000 Mbps on the Ethernet side.

When are the downtown businesses on Park & Evergreen going to be getting UIA service? I have seen the numbered zones, but no mention of the heart of the business section or the cost?

If businesses leave Frontier, do they get to keep their number (for Vonage or similar)?  If not, they may be reluctant to add UIA cost.  I imagine most of the shops are on tight margins.

You have the right to port your existing phone number to another service. We had one of our business 249 numbers ported to a VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service last year.

There is a process that must be followed or you risk losing the number but it can be done in most cases.

Working on it.. we have to bore over there.. which is quite time consuming given all the leach lines running around everywhere (undocumented). We will get it after we light section 2, which we are close to right now.

There are several ways to port then "park" your number.  One service I used is www.numbergarage.com. I tried it out and it works. Just park your number there and then you can forward your calls to your cell or where ever you want. Pretty inexpensive at the time but you might check to see if it is still this way.

I used a couple of VoIP providers for this a few years ago and they work well generally (if the latency isn't awful, like Frontier).

The best (and smallest) one I used is Future-Nine.com, and I'm getting ready to port a number to them.

While you can use a VoIP phone or adapter and a normal telephone, they provide voice mail, or can forward to your cell, or ring several numbers and direct the call to the first one that answers.

It's basically run by one guy, who also provides support -- meaning that the guy answering questions actually knows the answers, isn't just reading from a script.

We are using www.ringcentral.com for our VOIP line and pleased with all the features it includes.

Word of caution to those switching from landlines - if the Internet is down for any reason you will not have VOIP service.

Also something to consider is Google voice. You can port your number there and then port it back out later or continue to use the forwarding features to send calls to a different number. I love voice to text on the voicemails. Haven't actually listened to a voicemail in years.

Google Voice to text is great!  I especially love the transcripts when someone with an accent (ANY accent) leaves a message.   ;D
