I want to thank you ALL for your information and comments! I do appreciate it all.
Probably I would not use Uber where there is good and frequent public transportation. As this is not the case at this time I had to look for a good alternative. And I do believe that is what I found in Uber.

You all have a pleasant day!  :sunny:

Sorry Snowbird, we are all just educating each other about UBER and our options, thanks to your inquiry. :)
Regarding insurance, the UBER driver I know said that as soon as a customer steps into the UBER driver's car, the UBER insurance takes over. That being said, if you have an accident while transporting someone for money, you and your insurance company will be sued as well.

According to the following http://www.sacbee.com/news/state/article27366271.html, the judge says that Uber should be suspended in California for not charging riders equally no matter where they live.  Uber failed to provide the California Public Utilities Commission data that confirmed compliance.

I believe it was just yesterday that the LAX Airport Comm. granted Uber permission to do drop-offs at LAX.  I am confused because they do list LAX rates. Perhaps that was just for pick-ups. Regardless, the L.A. City Council will likely take the matter up and could change that.  cheryl o7o

An update on Uber:
I used it both in Oceanside and Carlsbad two weeks ago: it was so easy getting a car (max. 7 minutes wait) and the drivers were nice and friendly and I felt very comfortable driving with them.

I must say I have used in cabs in San Francisco and New Orleans and that's about and have never been excited about it.  On my recent trip to Chicago I used Uber 3 times and had great experiences every time.  They were all friendly drivers that actually seem to care about you and getting you there instead of trying to just do what they can to turn the meter.  I would recommenced anyone out of town without a car try it.

Does Uber screen the drivers?  How do I know i'm not being picked up by a serial killer?

Sharyn... You don't know if you're being picked up by a serial killer.. anymore than you would know that in a taxi.. or the guy that helps you with your groceries.
You never know that until they arrest a serial killer. I suggest you just verify that the driver has a valid license and insurance and carry a knife. cheryl o7o

Or, carry one of those handy tasers you sell. Hah! I keep thinking I should buy one of those. Not for serial killers.. for rogue dogs. cheryl o7o

Sharyn... There is a piece in the LAT today about several Uber drivers having prior, serious felony convictions. Course, that same piece states the same is true for taxi drivers.  I also think that those with felony convictions have a hard time finding a job. It's a war out there between Uber and the Taxi Drivers Assoc.  I've never hired Uber.. but I sure took a lot of taxis when I lived in L.A. My main complaint was that: 1) they'd try to be sneaky and take the long route; 2) they drove way to fast for me; 3) I had to listen to their endless complaints about the rules for taxi drivers (and I couldn't understand them because of their accents); 4) All that said, most of them were quite nice and we'd talk about their native country on the ride. That was always interesting.  cheryl o7o

Just completed all hiring background stuff and am now researching my insurance options for added coverage.

Hello Iris,
as I haven't visited this page in a looong time I just read your comment today...
Are you still driving for Uber and Lyft?
I very much hope to make it to Wrightwood next year and would need a ride (most likely from and to Ontario airport or Vincent Grade/Acton).
Have a great day!
