Decorah Eagles - 2016
« on: Feb 19, 16, 11:46:15 PM »
A routine check of the website of the eagles today finds mom in the nest with ONE EGG already! There is no info on the site (below the stream) so I think they were caught off guard.  In fact, I think the camera might have been on the wrong nest (there are two).  http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles

I have been fascinated by these eagles for the last few years ever since you introduced them to me. Thank you for that!

Which nest did they choose this year?

Thanks again!

You are most welcome! Looks like they chose the newer nest again this year.  The camera has been on the other one until now.  I think they caught the RRP of guard-the narrative the live stream page has not changed.  They usually keep that up to date.

Thank you makgirl. I have been following them as well, and also Fred and Wilma, the geese at Eaglecrest.

"RRP NEST UPDATE: Both eaglets are eating a variety of prey and growing. D 24 is now a nestling! We are still waiting for hatch of the third egg."

Screen shots taken live from this am.  Third egg is at 40 days incubation, could go as long as 44 days...

#3 (or maybe #1?) still has not hatched.

From the Raptor Resource Project blogspot:

Is the last egg going to hatch?

The last egg in the Original Decorah nest
As of this morning, the unhatched egg in Decorah is somewhere between 49 and 42 days old. Can it still hatch? Eagle eggs have hatched as late as 44 days after they were laid. If this is the last egg, we still have roughly two days in which hatch could occur. However, eggs have never hatched this far apart in Decorah before. Given the dates, it is possible that we've seen the hatch of eggs number two and three instead of eggs number one and two as we initially assumed. Roughly 3% to 12% of bald eagle eggs fail to hatch based on the studies I read, although some sources put the number a little higher, at 10% to 25%.
