Vertical Antenna
« on: Dec 18, 19, 06:10:14 PM »
Fairly new Ham here. So far I have only used 2m and I am looking to get into HF. I am looking for a vertical I could attach to the eve of my roof or possibly something horizontal that I could run from eve to eve on the roof. I would like to keep it under $300 since I am just starting out. Putting anything on the ground or in the trees isn't really an option due to my better-half's hardcore gardening.

Most HF verticals are a quarter-wave electrically, and that means you need a ground plane.  It's possible to create a ground plane up at roof-level, but that's going to be bigger than your roof.

There are some fairly cool things you could try for almost no money (wire antennas are just that, wire).

If you want to brainstorm, your better-half works with my better-half.  She has my number.  :-)
