Down to 1.1% Case Fatality Rate -- lots of testing and very low death rate. 1 Death on 11/26 for example.
Being lumped in with LA when there is no issue in SB County is madness.

@Cal_OES will issue region-wide emergency alerts at noon Tuesday, asking residents to stay home except for essential activities. The alert will be sent via text message through the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system across Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley.

SB County is at 6.1% ICU remaining capacity - 5.8% to 6.8% over the last 14 days
Cases divided by Deaths continue to decline. .74% - Analysis: Deaths are declining while testing is greatly increasing - even listing cases or making decisions based on the number of cases is clearly not a good idea.

Wes, a couple of things. It's really not just about deaths. We are still learning about the long hauler issues so many are experiencing. And with the new variant supposedly more contagious, the more cases we have the more potential for deaths to increase. Also it's my understanding that the County dashboard data is behind by about a week, do you know if that's so?

When you mention not using case numbers to make decisions, are you talking about decisions on what businesses to open or close etc?

I think we wouldn't be at this point if individuals and business owners had followed the guidelines, both at home and while out. Too many people felt the need to express their freedoms without understanding how that affects so many others.

A couple of thoughts on Wes's post:

SB County had 1323 deaths on 12/18; 1420 deaths on 12/24; and 1445 deaths on 12/31 (last update, SB County Dashboard). I don't know why Wes had different numbers.

I think that reporting the number of cases and the rate of those cases is a good idea. It gives you an idea as to whether the positive rate is declining, static, or increasing. There is a 7-day lag in the reporting as KW noted. The case rate for 12/13-12/19 was 23.3%. A week earlier it was 22.7%. The 7-day rate for CDPH monitoring as of 12/31 was 22.34. That's 1+ in 5 tests coming back positive. Yesterday, County Health reported two cases of the new, more contagious strain in SB County.

The ICU beds available are 138 for a county of 2.2 million. That may be 5.8-6.8% - but it's still just 138 beds for our population. Our hospitals are drowning.

The Tri-Community has not escaped the worst of it. Phelan has now had 6 deaths, Pinon Hills 2, and Wrightwood 2. The positive rate for cases is now growing here as well.

One number I read is that between 10 & 15% of those that test positive require hospitalization. We definitely saw an increase from the "Thanksgiving Bump" and we will see what Christmas brought us in a week. We are far from out of this. I was disheartened to see that our Board of Supervisors is suing to re-open.

Respectfully, I don't know what you mean; are you talking about WW/Phelan/PH? Where are the guidelines not being followed locally? Also, San Bernardino has 657 deaths/million of population, below the CA average of 668 and well below the USA average of 1083.

If you are talking about nationally, I have spent "the holidays" in Utah and Idaho, two states with cities not dissimilar to the High Desert except pretty much anything goes: schools have been open (with masks) since August, indoor dining with little distancing, unmasked patrons in bars day and night. UT and ID both saw increases in cases and deaths that rose in late Nov and those stats decreased on their own through Dec.

The Midwest from North Dakota to Pennsylvania saw a similar pattern earlier (November) and in the past 2 weeks the wave has come to California. Folks like me who think the virus is going to do what it's going to do and measures beyond the original Feb 2019 recommendations of physical distance and hand washing have diminishing returns are generally put in the position of proving a negative ("Imagine how much worse it would be if we had not __insert favorite restriction here____ !!) but I am reminded of Cormac McCarthy in No Country For Old Men: if the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?

I see your point. In answer to your question, yes there are many businesses in the tri community that are not or have not followed the guidelines. Several restaurants are open for indoor dining without distancing, the UPS store staff in Phelan never wore or required masks, and many people refuse to wear them for various reasons. I see it every time I go to Staters.

Respectfully, if you travelled to multiple states for the holidays then that's exactly what I'm talking about. With asymptomatic people spreading this virus, how do you know you aren't part of the problem?

This virus is relatively new with so much we don't know yet. And as I mentioned before, it's not just about deaths. I'm in my 60's and don't want to risk it with limited hospital beds and the potential for recurring illness.

My brother lives in Virginia and doesn't wear a mask or distance while at church. He tells me to take lots of vitamin D because it might help and it won't hurt. That's exactly how I feel about the guidelines for masks and distancing... It might help and it won't hurt, so why not?

Regarding opening or closing schools and businesses, I don't have those answers. Like you said, we don't know what might have happened right? You mention a couple of regions and their stats, but I would have to research that myself to get a good feel for if I agree with you or not.

Curious, do you think everyone (residents and businesses alike) have been following all the guidelines, or are you saying there shouldn't be guidelines? What would you do? Honest question.
