FP-5 vote: a question
« on: Aug 25, 20, 02:33:15 PM »
As I understand it, FP-5 was originally created by a vote of the residents of Helendale.

They created an assessment to enhance fire service in Helendale.

It was later (and contrary to the documents forming a fire protection district for Helendale) that other parts of the county were annexed, ultimately annexing the entire county.

I'm all for the repeal, I'm voting in favor, because we never got a chance to vote one way or the other.

I'm just curious: what happens to Helendale?

Does this abolish FP-5 entirely, or does it restore the original boundaries?

It just returns FP-5 to it's original boundaries and the county is allowing the voters to decide at the November election--it has to carry by 2/3s vote if my memory is correct.

I may very well be mistaken, but I think a 2/3rds majority is needed to extend or increase taxes.

Since this does the opposite, a simple majority should do.

IANAL, and I don't play one on TV.

Glad this won't hurt Helendale.

I would likely vote to fund our Fire Station, but I very much want the chance to vote.

The article I'm posting is long, but about 2/3 in is a discussion about Helendale. It seems that the opinion of the county counsel is, if the initiative passes, then ALL fp-5 special tax is repealed, not just the expansion.  http://sbcsentinel.com/2020/04/forced-by-petition-drive-supervisors-ok-tax-vote/

If someone has it handy, I'd like to read the actual initiative.

If they wish, Helendale can (by vote) reinstate their FP district, and other communities who think their fire stations are at risk can do the same (FP-1 through FP-6 are examples).

I was unable to locate a copy of the proposed measure online. The SB county elections website has not been updated with voter guide info for November 2020 yet. When it is updated and available, I would imagine that it will be able to be found here.

Interesting, and messy.

Amazing that repealing the FP-5 fees altogether and resetting the boundaries back to the original FP-5 were deemed to be the same.

The Red Brennan group just dropped off several Repeal FP-5 [the $157+? parcel fee] yard signs at my home.

Let me know if you wish to reserve one for your yard?

If you can't come by 5798 Cedar Street and pick it up, I will try to bring it by to you.
