First efforts with new camera system
« on: Aug 05, 05, 10:34:41 PM »
I recently purchased a Canon D20 with a stabilized telephoto and wide angle lens.  Wrightwood has been helping me get started and after over a thousand photos, I see why getting a great shot is so difficult.

This is a sunset on Table Mountain Campground.

These are a family of quail that visit our pond.  These are the teenage group....we have several more coveys that have the smaller guys.  Notice the sentinals above.

The quail family was feeding in the undergrowth behind the house.  I didn't see them at first.  Camo quail.

If my book is correct, this is a Scott's Oriole visiting the hummingbird feeder.  Only saw it once.

Finally, this is our cat sitting on a ladder I placed to go up on the roof for something.  I have no idea why the eyes came out like that but it looks like you can see the rods and cones that make them such good night hunters.

Those are only photos that would consider sharing at this point.  Learning photography has been a much greater challenge then I anticipated.  Having a digital system means I can experiment until I figure things out.

Thank you.  Wrightwood, Royce and a number of others have posted outstanding photos on this site.  I see now that it is much more difficult then I ever believed....even with good equipment.  Thankfully, I have digital gear and plenty of storage space.  I'll post something after the next 1,000 shots.

Here I am over 1,000 shots later.  The digital format is a blessing and a curse.  It allows the luxury of taking a lot of pictures and eliminating the ones that don't work.  I never realized just how difficult it is to line up the subject, lighting, mood, etc.  It is getting easier to just grab the camera and snapshoot something when it happens spontaneously.

The first photo is of our Belgain Draft Mares, Katie and JC.  Honest and true, these horses are truly a part of our family.  They stand very still in the first sun that comes into their pen each morning...basking before they get fed.

Nice photos.  Obviously, you're no Wrightwood yet but keep trying and you'll get there.  I really like the crawdad.

This was an excellent shot!

This is a shot that I took of the moon rising over Mountain Top. Wrightwood helped me tweak a bit to give this effect.

Wildman,

You might already know this (I wished I would have know when I got my 20D in March) but when you change lenses it is good to point the camera towards the ground reducing the chances of particles falling on you mirror or sensors.  It tricky but I have reduced my problem with specs.

If you are interested in using a smaller camera bag that accomodates the camera and one lens take a look at the Lowepro Day Runner.  You can look at mine anytime you like.

The backpack holds everything but much to bulky for me to take everywhere.

I love my camera!!!  It is night and day from the point and shoot digital cameras I have had (still do).
