Thanks ForestGal... My optical zoom entered the digital mode as it was maxed out so it appears a bit distorted.... it took away from the sharpness a bit. The sky was awesome that day.... Turns out it is a Cooper Hawk.... I hopefully will capture him again, they say they usually keep the same hunting area.

That last Anna's hummer is fantasic...I didn't know the manzanitas bloomed all year.....good for the hummers.....So the five you have at winter stay all winter.....they don't migrate?

Hummers are supposed to migrate (it says in the book) but we have had these five or six since Fall continously. Wrightwood had one at his feeder and the temperature was 20^o outside. Last year, one showed up during the big snowfall and stayed the rest of the year. They must be hardier then they seem.

Wildman convinced me to put out a feeder and see if they were still around in Wrightwood.

I mixed up a sweeter than normal batch of sugar water and filled 2 feeders. After a couple of days at least 1 Anna's began showing up and once during a 20 degree morning. Yesterday the hummer was making regular visits during the day.

I figured the sweeter than normal mix would help prevent the syrup from freezing and give those little guys some extra kick. I used equal parts of sugar and water by volume.

I was also surprised on the manzanitas blooming right now. While in the Middle Fork of Lytle Creek over the weekend I didn't find any blooming manzanitas. Wildman must be doing something special to his plants.

During the spring/summer we also use about 4:1. I've read on hummingbird feeder instructions to use a heavier concentration when you first hang a new feeder, then you can back off. I can't picture that a heavier concentration could harm their tongues if it's recommended.

By the way who was it that talked to a hummingbird to find out it hurt their tongues?

Seems like a good deal of misinformation about hummers.

So much for my idea that hummers stay away in the winter ...I'll get me feeder out and make some hard core 50 50 nectar...And I'm considering putting up another feeder at 101..kitchen window....I miss that...

Last night, I was astonished to hear a hummer chirping in the tree by the feeder well after dark. I got a flashlight and sure enough, he was feeding at the feeder in the dark. Once I figured out how to use the flash, I spent 20 minutes trying to find the bird in the dark. I could hear him but couldn't see him in the view finder. Finally got one that shows just how dark it was outside. The side light is coming from our front porch light.

Sometimes in the early morning or late afternoon, the sun comes through the feeders and illuminates the birds as they feeds. Taken two days ago, this bird was fearless.

Captured this this wkd. I wasn't even looking thru the lens. The wolves were getting into it a bit so I just put my camera down to their level and hit the burst.... When I got home and looked at the pics I was so surprised at this shot.....

I don't know if he is gorgeous...but he is beatuful in his own right....and deserving of respect...Wolves have been given a bad name over time..Most likely from being misunderstood...The rocks in the belly stuff comes from an old verion of Little Red Riding Hood, which like most fairytales, has been influenced by the cultures it grew through...I've been to the wolf sanctuary in Lucerne Valley...I'd love to visit again....I couldn't believe how big they were.....I went there for a gentleman who had been bitten by a black widow....a couple of years ago...

I had the good fortune of being on the project with Wildman yesterday. This picture that I took was taken around 7 hours later than Wildman's photo. The clouds were like the tide coming in, they kept climbing up the mountains and shortly after my picture was taken, the clouds enveloped us. It was a pretty amazing day on Blue Ridge. Does anyone know what that metal cross is for, in front of the tree?
