so if there was a gang of drunks at a campground, one single ranger would be expected to take care of the problem,by himself?

They have one of two choices.  Walk away if they feel the situation is too scary or try and deal with it themselves.  Or, they can call to see if they can get some backup.  The likelyhood of that is getting smaller and smaller.  So what happens is, it can't be dealt with, people get away with it, and it gets worse and worse.

4th of July Weekend there were several thousand people along Piru creek just below Pyramid Dam.  Shots were fired after hours so the Forest Service called in LA County.  The deputy stood on the road, looked down to the masses of people and all the illegal fires and said, "I ain't goin' down there!"  So when the gun toters won't go, don't expect the $30,000/year rec tech to go down there (oh, and if they are a temporary employee, they don't get any benefits either).

Is it time for us to form a Posse?  Load our weapons and hang someone by their toes.  Don't hang them by their ears, I'm living testomony on why that shouldn't be done.  Seriously I have head people speaking more and more about taking care of issues on their own, if someone else doesn't.  I read about someone running around Wrightwood with their gun after shooting at his girlfriend.  Guess what, this person had a shaved head.  Surprise Surprise!

Does anyone know if the Big Pines Info center sells Adventure Passes?  Supposedly our local Big 5 sells them, but when I went there, they said they have been sold out for over a month.

How exciting - have fun!

here's what the parking lot a Vincent Gap looks like. guess the forest service can't find any volunteers to pick weeds. god forbid the rangers do it, that would take time from writing tickets for no adventure pass.

i guess the forest service must have gotten a break from chasing drunken gang bangers, cause they cleared the weeds. yeah, rangers.

They are not tickets. NNCs. Notice of Non Compliance.
Whether the $5. gets to back to the Angeles or not, is not as important as the record of usage. Every NNC has a Latitude/Longitude written on it for every location of occurance. When the NNCs are processed all those locations become little red dots on a computer map. And the real benefit is that when it comes times to evalauate which forest or whcih district has more actrivity, it helps justify more resources for that area. So if we generate a whole pile of red dots around Big Pines we should -yeah, right- receive more resources in staffing or funding.

I've always thought the Forest Adventure pass could be forged easily.  Since the pass is usually displayed by hanging on a mirror of a locked vehicle they wouldn't have to be perfect. Just good enough to pass inspection from standing outside of the vehicle.

10 years ago I busted the Lee Vining high school print shop students selling forged lift tickets in the June Mountain parking lot.  I thought it was kinda funny, but reported them to the authorities because they were selling them.  Had they just been using them to ski themselves I would have never known.  They probably ski'd for free already by just going to school in Lee Vining.

So after inadvertently recommending folks to boycott the Adventure Pass in another thread,, here I am writing about the plausibility of forging the Adventure pass in this thread.

I think I'll logoff now and give it a rest.  drive safe!

An Adventure pass is $5.00.

Wow, that's a lot.

Takes a pretty sharp guy, (hey what do you call it when you stick yourself with something sharp? Word starts with a P) anyway, it takes one of those to suggest that a $5.00 pass is worth forging. But what do you expect from someone who won't do his civic responsibility and serve on a jury. Of course come to think of someone who advocates forgery is obviously less than totally honest so probably should not be on a jury anyway.

He would probably convict the judge and free the prisoner.

I think they need to re-name the "Adventure Pass" something else.  Something like...

"Park Wherever You Want To Pass"
"Dirty Diaper Dump Card"
"Iced Lake Adventure Pass"
"Astro Van Adventutre Pass"
"You Can't Ticket Me Pass"
"Snow Thieve Pass"
"How To Cook On The Highway Pass"
"We'll Play In Your Yard Pass"

Any other suggestions out there.....

There's plenty of judges that need to spend some time in jail. It's not a perfect system.

True, but your pomposity and simple disregard for common sense and ethical principles makes your judgments inert.

You can see where Adventure Pass monies have been used since 1997 at the following:

Adventure Pass - Passes&Permits - Pacific Southwest Region
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/fees-at-work.shtml

If you go to the bottom of the page, there are links to reports and photo logs from 2002-6 for the Pacific Southwest Region which includes the Angeles, Cleveland, Los Padres, and San Bernardino forests. When you look at the Angeles, don't forget it stretches from WW to Saugus.

BPSquirrel can supply more info, but as I recall the Big Pines VIS was rehabbed by the Fenner Camp folks with AP monies and, I believe the bathrooms across the way were built with these funds. Btw, the Fenner guys are awesome, they also regularly remove the incredible amounts of trash left along the sides of the road in the Big Pines area. I'm not sure where the funding comes from, but without them, there would be no way FS personnel could keep up even if left at it full time with no time for their other responsibilities.

Fyi, AP are $5 for a day pass or $30 for an annual pass ($35 if you buy two at the same time). If that's too steep, one can always go in with a friend and car pool which is a good idea anyway.
