Snakes are out!

I got to the post office today just in time to see a large gopher snake being caught. He was not very happy about being picked up by his tail and dropped into a storage container.

He must have been about 4' long. Keep your eyes peeled everyone! :)

Rennboy and I were up on Ash Tues night watering a yard for some friends on vacation and saw a nice size king snake slither by the water fawcet and under the house....when I relayed it to my friends via e-mail they said, "that's great news!"  Last time they saw one, the wife made her husband kill it and shortly after came a rattlesnake that the king snake would have taken care of for them.

Thanks. I had to Wikipedia because I forgot what they looked like and the California King Snake had a gray/white pattern.

Do we even have Coral Snakes?

We had about a four year old rattler behind our trashcan at Twin Lakes and Maple 3 nights ago.  Keep your eyes and ears open!

Is it legal to shoot a rattle snake on your own property in WW?

You can't discharge a firearm in town.

I saw a really long but skinny snake crossing the road near the country club. I had to swerve to miss it because it was moving so slowly. I thought it might've been a big garter snake. It was a light grayish/green color. Didn't know there were rattle snakes in Wrightwood. Hubby won't be happy.

Rattlers seem to be most common in properties that are close to the washes and forests, and large vacant areas. But they can be anywhere, I gather, esp if they have a ready food supply--don't do things that attract rodents, and control them in your home/garage/shed.

jek134, we have many rattlesnakes up here. However, I can go for several years without seeing one. The only time I was scared was on a PCT hike with my dog and we got rattled at 2 times by 2 different snakes. Now THAT was scary, but was also our only encounter in 8 years. And neither of us were bitten, although a puppy was bitten later that day on the same trail. I now avoid very narrow overgrown trails during the hot months, but that's the only change I make. Although I don't stick my hand in the woodpile during hot weather either.

I suspect that when my weed wacker is running, all the snakes make a run for the county line. But I keep my eyes open too.

For the last two years in a row I've seen the most beautiful rattlesnake I've ever seen on the way to Guffy.  It is nearly jet black and about 4 and a half feet long.

Each year I spot him on the road at the spot with all the fine dirt and sand.  After shooing him off the road, getting him quite upset, you can hear him for a quarter mile.  ;D

I actually live in Pinon Hills now, so that's the town this snake was active in.

This is Mojave Green which I found in my backyard.  The dogs were barking at something, and this is what I found.  Luckily they didn't get very close to it and I was able to move it and will be relocating it.

Butterfly,
here's another King Snake on our driveway from last week.

Try not to be fearfully of King Snakes as they are not harmful to humans and are good to have around. They help keep the rodent population down.

thats a cool looking king
