Unless I am mistaken...

Looks like a Gopher Snake to me.

NOT POISONOUS.

Also it has a slender head. I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) all of the local poisonous snakes have a very distinct triangle (viper) head.

I saw a medium-sized gopher snake at the Country Club. It crawled away before my feet returned to the ground. (Surprised me just a tad.)

Yeah, Wildman, you get a karma point from me, too, for:
a) not getting bitten,
b) bringing this danger to our awareness, (lousy English; good thought),
and,
c) keeping safety awareness in the forefront.

Glad no one (human or animal) was bitten.

We've seen quite a few snakes in Phelan, in the vicinity of Wilson Ranch Rd., north of Phelan Rd. I've counted 3 gopher snakes, 2 king snakes, and a red racer (also called a coachwhip). Fortunately no rattlesnakes yet. I think perhaps the proximity of so many snakes that are natural enemies of rattlers might be keeping them away.

That's the most I've seen in probably 15 years. Last time I saw that many in such a short time they were mostly rattlesnakes, including one enormous one trying to make its way across Johnson Rd., near Sunnyslope. I nearly ran over it on my bicycle. Scared the CRAP outta me.  :-\

The dog that was bit by the rattler last week no longer has a tail as the vet removed it.

Beware!!
Two snake encounters occurred yesterday that I know about.

A dog was bitten by a rattler on the upper Heath Canyon levee road, behind the Church Camp. Outcome unknown at this time and I believe it may have been a forum members dog.

Thanks for the update, so sad to hear they had to take the tail. A friends mom's dobie in Phelan was bite by a rattler last week in the paw, bad swelling ans several hundred dollars at the vet and the dog seems to be ok now, no major problems.

Interesting note on dogs getting bit by rattlesnakes.  I just assumed that when a dog got bit, you took them to the vet and they gave them anti-venom like humans.  Anti-venom is extremely expensive.

Dr. Wagner has had remarkable success treating snake bit dogs without giving anti-venom.  He treats the dogs with fluids, steroids and antibiotics and has around a 95 % success rate and without taking out a second mortage to do it.

I also asked him about the new vaccine for dogs against rattlesnake venom but he didn't have a strong sense that it was worth the investment.

*shudder*
