I found a small gopher snake under the house this morning stuck to a glue trap for mice. It wasn't easy to free the snake of the glue but in the end the little guy was released near the guzzler and appeared ok.

Vegetable oil will get em out. I don't like to kill the mice, so I relocate them. Did it twice and they seemed ok, but I bet thier cholesterol level went up.
I'll give you Karma tomorrow for not killing the snake!

I like snakes, too. ((They can't help it if they have no legs. Legs are over-rated, anyway.)
I don't kill them; I relocate them. After all, it's us who moved into their territory.

No.....but I am researching a product that is supposed to keep snakes away from your property.  I have ordered some (skeptic that I am) and will give it a test and report back on the results.  I figure that if I can avoid or reduce the trauma of frequently stepping on rattlesnakes, it might be a good investment.  If it works to keep other types away, that would be a bonus. I'll let you know.

I would be very interested in your report. Good luck and be safe.

Hey Wildman, have you ever thought of or tried using snake fence around your property? Here is a link:

No....but I am considering hiring a group of beaters that will travel just ahead of me with sticks and cans with stones....loudly announcing my impending passage.  Kinda like you see on the National Geographic Channel when they are in tiger country in India.  Not sure how effective that idea is as I believe that not only do they not have legs but are deaf as well.

Now Wildman--haven't you heard the saying, "First person wakes the snake up, second person makes it mad and the third person is the one who gets bitten!"?  So if you hire those beaters, make sure you hire at least three and walk behind ALL of them   ;)  :D

I have a 2 year old lab that i am taking to a rattlesnake avoidance training class at the Gameland Kennels Dog Training Center in Corona on july 16.  I hope that the dog learns how to avoid the snakes which will let me know when i am out walking with him were the snakes are. So i can avoid them too. I dont know how they do this other than they do use live snakes to train with. I will update the forum after we take the class to see if it is worth the $65.00. If it will protect my dog from sticking his nose in the wrong place it will be worth the money.

Patrick Callaghan is who is doing this class to. Sounds like your dog learned that rattle snakes are not to fool with. Thats what i want for mine plus with my eye sight so bad it will help me not walking in the wrong place. They do say a maintenance class keeps them refreshed about avoiding snakes. We will see if mine learns that fast i hope he does.

"Basicly they just use the horse's bloodstream to develope the anti-bodies or serums needed by injecting small amounts of the disease or venom. "

And lots of folk are allergic to horses. So one of the reasons you can't buy anti-venom for your first aid kit (besides cost and need for refrigeration) is that many people will respond to the anti-venom by going into anaphyllactic shock.  So the hospital routine is shot of anti-venom, shot of epinephrine, when patient starts to recover, repeat, repeat, repeat.

The newer CroFab brand of antivenin is of ovine (sheep) derivation.  Supposedly less allergenic.

WHOOOBOY--you got that one right!  I forgot about my brother being allergic to horse serum tentus.  He got a cut on some rusty nasty thing as a kid and when he got the shot, his arm swelled up like a ballon.  They were worried they were going to have to split the skin to keep it from bursting.  He is an amature race car driver and has to have that allergy listed on his helmet.  Very interesting abuot developing sheep derived antivenum (hmmm, but he is also allergic to wool  :P )

My first live snake I've come across since I have been up here. This is a Mountain King Snake that I snapped pictures of two days ago up on Blue Ridge. Please do not tell anybody because Mountain King Snakes do not exist in our area. ;)
