6pm when I took the first photo so it was a few minutes before that when I first heard the dog.

It was strange that the snake was in the middle of the neighbors back yard on some rocks. The two dogs roam the yard during the day and surprised they didn't find the snake while it made it's way to the middle of the yard.... It appears they were napping on the job  :P

I showed this pic to my boys.  They couldn't believe what they saw.  I told them to be really alert and watch where they step when they are up in the wash.

I've got two western diamondbacks in plastic containers here at home.
I'd like to release them, but I haven't a clue how to do so.  Any thoughts?

It was not very cool with my wife.  I was just thankful that he showed himself before one of us accidently stepped on him.  Haven't seen the big boys yet but am sure we will.

what is the technique for removing (picking up) a rattlesnake without using tools designed for that purpose?  you know, using caveman tools around the house.

A broom and a trash can

Guide the snake into a trash can, that's on its side, with the broom.  Sweep with quick purposeful strokes, try to move it quickly with the least irritation. Then lift the can on its side when the snake is completely in.  This has worked for me on more than one occassion.  Don't let your neighbors know about your new skill; tag you'll be the snake guy.

Only to be done if there is no way to get a professional and the snake must be removed immediately.

I've used a rake. If you scoop them up between the tines at about the middle of their bodies (Do not measure.), they can't go anywhere.
Then you can put them in something like a (large) trash can.
