What does it cost to get licensed? You do have to get a license, don't you? I think maybe my husband and I would be interested, but he will be gone on the 15th? Would that matter? I would probably be late on the 15th also as I have a meeting to go to first.

Liz,
There is no cost for the class itself.
The books needed for the class run $30 and could be shared by a couple if the budget was real tight.

The cost to take the test was something like $15 per person.

As far as missing a class and being late for one I personally think it would work for someone that was really interested, but I'll let Clint be the final judge as he's the instructor.

If you are interested and motivated enough to study on your own, which you have to do anyway, you could probably miss the first class as it is mostly introduction and rules. But missing subsequent classes would make it tough. If you would like to see what the test material is like, give this a try.

After all class session are complete, Clint has arranged one additional session, in Wrightwood, where the test is given by approved examiners. You'll know that day if you passed the test and your official license (ticket) arrives by US Mail a few weeks later.

That's great but that won't happen every time until you practice.

When you can consistently take the test and get 80's you're ready for the real thing.

This is cool.

I have looked into HAM and some of the equipment looks a little pricey. What type of (dollar figure) investment would it take for a novice newby who has the Technician Classification. I understand there are hand held units. Is that a cheaper route?

Also, if we did have a major disaster, who do HAM operators communicate with besides other HAM operators? Fire, Police, Red Cross.......?

A hand held (HT) is not expensive and runs less than $150.

Hams do not generally communicate directly with agencies.

Looks like the Amateur Radio Workshop is on track. I have enough confirmations now to go forward, and if all those who have expressed interest actually commit, it will be a pretty full room. Start taking those practice tests!

I had my license -- but I'm not sure if it's still good. How do I find out? My ex took all the ham radios -- but both my kids got their licenses when they were young teens. My call sign is (was) KF6EVA

Are you living here, or in Yoba Linda? You need to update your license right away so you can renew in June. You are good until June 29th of this year! So don't let it lapse. The FCC no longer sends out reminders.

No. If you use that site they charge you $8.00.

You need an FCC form 610. It's free to update directly.

Cathy, would you like to attend the class and just get refreshed. Some things have changed in ten years and we really focus on understanding how it all works, not just studying the test material.
