Veronica was with her hiking group on Acorn this morning and ran into the girl whose family shot and wounded it. She had pictures on her phone. Veronica said it was huge. Apparently the fatal shot was done by a Sheriff's deputy....

I'm glad no one was hurt - people and pets - but its a shame that this animal could not have been rehomed. We're trespassing on their land not the other way around.

I just got off the phone with DFG.
The lion was between 150-175 lbs and a female.

A resident wounded the cat that had their 65lb dog in its mouth at the top of Acorn. The lion had attacked 3 large dogs last night all within a 3 hour period of time and all large dogs. (american bull dog, yellow lab and akita mix)

The lion was finally shot by the DFG.

It will be interesting to get the entire story.
Why and where the cat was shot & wounded.
What, when, and where Fish & Game and the Sheriff's Department became involved.
Etc.
It sounds like this cat was dangerously comfortable in the local community. That is unfortunate, but it happens.
I believe that the departments involved were considering the safety of the community, as well as not allowing a wounded animal to slowly suffer and die.
It would be nice if a taxidermist could preserve the cat for either the local museum or the Grassy Hollow Visitor's Center.

Funny how stories get passed down the line....

That's exactly why I contacted Fish & Game as a 300 lb lion would be an all time world record by almost 25 lbs. In Colorado the record is 220lbs and the largest mountain lion was 276 pounds caught in southern Utah.

Another thing that DFG said was that the lion jumped a 6 foot dog run fence to get to the dog.

Good question.
It sounds like Monky6 was present when her dog was attacked and for it to come back/continue "hunting" seems pretty bold.

Does anyone know, if the cat had not already been shot, is it possible for Dept. Fish and Game to shoot with tranquilizer dart and then relocate the animal?

sorry for the mispost of 300lbs but that is what was told to me when i called today. Jemma was the first attack and all i know is it was huge! just got back from the vet they are doing surgery on her tonight hope to get her back in the tomorrow . She is tore up pretty bad. I am thankful for all of the persons involved in taking care of such a threat to our families and our animals. I know when I called 911 and they dispatched F&G out he gave me information that I was not aware of how strong these lions are I am just thankful Jemma got away, along with the other dogs, I wish she did not get hurt as bad as she did but we have our christmas present coming home hopefully tomorrow!

If it attacked so many dogs in so little time, it sounds like the animal was stressed, or has maybe young somewhere. Kind of a bummer for all involved.

One morning last week my wife saw what she is pretty sure was a dead mountain lion cub in the middle of Lone Pine Canyon road near the intersection of Swarthout Road. She remembers it was a silver color with black markings and huge paws. It really upset her to see such a beautiful young animal's lifeless body just lying on the road. I kept waiting to see if anyone else was going to post anything on it. Now I am curious if it is related to the adult that was killed. We looked at a lot of pictures of cubs and this is the one she thinks looks most like the one she saw:
